    Two women have been sentenced for an attack on student Mariam Moustafa.

    Mariah Fraser, 20, was given eight months in a young offenders' institution at Nottingham Crown Court.

    Britania Hunter, 18, has been given a community order.

    A 16-year-old girl who can’t be named because of her age, has been remitted to the youth court.

    Last year they and three others, who will be sentenced at another date, teamed up to punch the Egyptian student in Nottingham city centre and slam her into a bus stop.

    The 18-year-old suffered a stroke shortly after the attack and died a month later.

  3. Potentially dangerous dam to be removed at cost of £1.5mpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 14 June 2019

    A historic dam is being removed to avoid the possibility of "catastrophic" damage being caused to the A38.

    The £1.5m proposal, led by the Environment Agency, will see the majority of the centuries-old Dove Cliff Weir, between Rolleston and Egginton in Derbyshire, removed.

    It is thought that the plans would open up nearly 40 miles of migratory habitats for fish and other species.

    Representatives from the Environment Agency also say the dam requires persistent and costly maintenance due to its deterioration.

    They say that if the dam were to burst it could cause "catastrophic" damage downstream, including to the A38 near Burton which lies less than a mile away.

    The family of a seven-year-old boy dealing with serious heart problems have thanked their community after they rallied round to help them convert an old caravan into a "safe space" in his back garden.

    Kori, from Ripley, has been forced to miss lots of school over the past year after undergoing a heart transplant.

    After hearing about his predicament, people in Ripley helped his family to source the caravan and this week a local crane company lifted it into position for free.

    Kori's mother Kerrylee said: "We wanted to make a retreat for Kori in the back garden - a bit of an arts and crafts centre.

    "Kori's been in isolation so much over the past year, having somewhere for him to come out, it's a little bit of a safe space, no medical interventions, no-one hurting him."

    Chicks of "the most persecuted bird of prey in Britain" have been found in the Peak District.

    It is the second year in a row the seriously threatened hen harriers have bred there, which campaigners say "signals hope" that more birds can start to thrive in the park.

    Unfortunately last year's chicks, Arthur and Octavia, both disappeared in "suspicious circumstances", the RSPB said.

    According to the RSPB the birds are "on the edge of extinction" and most tagged hen harriers were either confirmed as illegally killed or disappeared in circumstances in which illegal killing is the only plausible explanation.

    A recent study concluded the survival rate of hen harriers are disappearing from managed grouse moors because of illegal killing.

    A trusted employee stole so much from the family business that had employed him for decades that it went bust.

    Bharat Suchak, of Silverstone Drive in Leicester, transferred nearly £662,000 from clothing company GS Fashions to his own account over the 30 years he worked as their bookkeeper, Leicestershire Police said.

    The 65-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud by abuse of position and was sentenced to three years and nine months in jail at Leicester Crown Court yesterday.

    Police are looking for a man who exposed himself to a 15-year-old girl on a Chesterfield street.

    The man, who is described as being white, well built and with dark hair, was wearing a jumper, blue jeans and carrying a bottle shaped bag when he reportedly exposed himself in Ashgate Road at around 18:30 on June 5.

    Police think he made his way towards Loundsley Green, and was last seen on a path near to Burbage Court.

  9. Stranded passenger's journey 'quicker by bike'published at 13:36 British Summer Time 14 June 2019

    An exasperated passenger on yesterday's landslide-struck train worked out he could have got home quicker if he'd cycled.

    Steve Watt tweeted the BBC, saying: "11 hours and 55 minutes later, finally home [in Leicester]. For context, if I’d cycled, it would’ve saved me about an hour and a half [according to Google]."

    Trains between Nottingham and London were delayed, cancelled and diverted because one was hit by a landslide in Northamptonshire, with the stricken train reportedly evacuated hours after it was hit.

    Notts County owner and chairman Alan Hardy has told supporters an issue "out of the club's control" was delaying a takeover deal.

    Mr Hardy announced in April he had accepted an offer for the Magpies, who were relegated from the Football League the following month.

    In a statement on the club's website, external Mr Hardy said: "Talks with prospective buyers are continuing in a constructive manner.

    "An issue out of the club’s control is currently delaying matters but I am extremely confident it will be resolved so we can reach a positive outcome.

    "Everyone involved is acutely aware that time is of the essence and we are working around the clock to get a deal done at the earliest opportunity.

    "I'm sorry that I can't reveal more but, as is normal practice, non-disclosure agreements have been signed, limiting what I can tell you at this stage.

    The swimming element has been taken out of a triathlon due to take place in Nottingham this weekend because of safety fears following heavy rain.

    The World Triathlon Series event, scheduled to take place from Nottingham's Victoria Embankment, will now be a duathlon, external consisting of cycling and running.

    Organisers said the decision was made after experts monitored flow rates and water quality in the River Trent over the past few days.

    They said: "The results clearly show that the increased flow rate and adverse water quality caused by the excessive rainfall make the swim segment unsafe for all participants."

    A man has been taken to hospital, external after being stabbed at McDonald's in Clifton.

    Nottinghamshire Police said officers were called to the fast food restaurant in Clifton Lane at about 06:40.

    Officers remain at the scene and witnesses are being sought.

    Thousands of new school places are to be created in the East Midlands after the government announced its latest wave of free schools this morning.

    Five will be built in our region - two secondary schools in Leicester, a secondary and primary school in Nottingham and a primary school in Derby.

    The Department for Education hopes it will help to raise standards and give parents more choice.

    Witnesses are being sought after a man was beaten up during a Derbyshire village's carnival day.

    Police said the 30-year-old suffered a broken arm and injuries to his head and face when he was attacked in Station Road in Hayfield at about 21:30 on 11 May, external.
