BHS owner Dominic Chappell says "no one is to blame" for the retailer's imminent collapse. He says: "It was a combination of bad trading and not being able to raise enough money from the property portfolio. In the end, we just couldn't reach an agreement with Arcadia over pensions."

The retailer will continue to work with administrators Duff & Phelps to "find a solution post the administration", Mr Chappell adds.

  11. How did it survive this long?published at 09:52

Nice summation of the situation from Jon Copestake, chief retail and consumer goods analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit, external.

    Quote Message

BHS has long been seen as an anachronism on the high street and it is surprising that it has survived this long. Its product offering has been superseded by a combination of diversified supermarkets, fast fashion, ecommerce and the expansion of John Lewis's more successful department store brand. Visitors to BHS outlets, even in prime locations on key shopping dates will have been struck by how quiet they have been. The chain simply stopped being relevant to shoppers."

  14. 'BHS did not adapt'published at 09:22

Consultancy Retail Remedy examines where it went wrong, external for BHS.

    Quote Message

BHS changed its name (sort of) and its logo, but in terms of an offer to keep up with retail and customer trends, they were well off the pace. We are not talking about the last two years, we are talking about a decade ago, within Phillip Green’s ownership. BHS dragged their feet over going online, which left them playing catch up with their competitors, Debenhams and Next. But then the offer that they had to put online was not a leading offer, and their customers were not early adopters of ecommerce. Simply put, BHS did not adapt."

  17. 'Real anger' at BHS ownerspublished at 08:54

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Staff at BHS will gather at 11am to hear a buyer could not be found and that additional funding couldn’t be found over the weekend to save the business. That means the risk their jobs will go is very high, BBC business editor Simon Jack tells Today.

Duff & Phelps is standing by to act as administrator of the chain after BHS has exhausted options to improve financial position, Simon says. BHS’s creditors took a massive haircut last month, in some cases accepting 25p for every £1 they were owed by BHS, but even then BHS needed another £100m of funding.

"You don’t have to be a retail expert to realise the BHS brand has got a bit tired," Simon says.

Meanwhile, he says there has been "real anger" at the current owners of BHS, Retail Acquisitions, which took £8m out of the business almost immediately after buying BHS for £1 last year.

  19. Cherry-pickers poised to pouncepublished at 08:31

    BBC Radio 4

More from Nick Hood, who says there is "every possibility that some of the stores will be cherry picked" by rival retailers. Sports Direct, which held talks with BHS over the weekend, is a “classic cherry-picker”, he points out.

Some of the stores will survive because of their location, which will mean some of the 11,000 jobs under threat will be saved.

As for the pension deficit, Mr Hood says the position of Sir Phillip Green is akin to being in the Hotel California ("you can check out, but you can never leave", as the Eagles sang).

The £80m offered by Sir Phillip to plug the pension deficit  "won't cut the mustard", Mr Hood adds. Eventually, he says, there will be a much higher contribution required by the Pension Regulator.
