If you're a rail commuter in the south east, it's going to be an arduous few days - Southern Rail conductors are going on strike. Today they'll kick off three days of industrial action over changes to the role which they say will affect safety.

The RMT union is fighting plans to turn conductors into "on-board supervisors", with drivers taking over responsibility for opening and closing carriage doors. They say it downgrades the role, taking away responsibility for safety, and paves the way for driver only trains. Southern Rail disagrees

Tom Brake is a Liberal Democrat MP in South west London. He's also a commuter on Southern Rail's services and has been campaigning for improvements. He tells Wake up to Money that after 25 years travelling on the service he can't recall the service beeing less reliable than it is now and he says the number of cancellations is unacceptable.

Commuters are paying a significant amount of money to have a service which isn't there, he says.

He'd like Southern Rail to lose responsibility for the route. Instead he'd like Transport for London to take over responsibility for suburban rail routes around London. TfL, he reckons, has a better consumer focus.

  4. Good morning!published at 06:00 British Summer Time 11 October 2016

Samsung is dominating the headlines today.

The South Korean company has said it will stop all sales of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone and users are being told to stop using their phones, and power them down.

Samsung recalled 2.5 million phones in September after complaints of exploding batteries and later assured customers that all replaced devices were safe.

But there are now reports that even those phones that had been replaced were catching fire.

We'll bring you all the latest on that and the rest of the day's news as it happens.

    Do stay with us.
