  1. What's the latest on the roads?published at 15:25 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

The A38 in Derbyshire has reopened after a serious collision occurred between the A50 and A5111, according to National Highways.

In Herefordshire, the A49 has also reopened in both directions after heavy flooding.

The A40 is open westbound between the M5 J11 and A417 near Gloucester. It was also shut earlier due to flooding.

The M25 remains closed anti-clockwise between J9 and J8, but National Highways says resurfacing works that had to be done after a lorry toppled over are "approaching completion".

  2. Heavy rain floods East Midlands Railway routespublished at 15:16 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

The East Midlands Railway Network says heavy rain has been affecting several of its routes.

Trains between Derby and Sheffield are running, but the line between Derby and Long Eaton continues to remain blocked, the railway company says in its latest update on X, external.

    Affected routes include:

    • Sheffield/Nottingham/London
    • Newark/Nottingham/Derby/Crewe
    • Matlock/Derby/Nottingham
    • Liverpool Lime Street/Nottingham/Norwich
    • Nottingham/Grantham/Skegness

East Midlands Railway Network says it does not have an estimate at the moment on when the flooding will recede to allow the lines to be safely reopened.

I've been speaking to William Coles, who is trying to return to the UK from Prague

Currently, he and his fellow passengers are in a small room in the airport, waiting out an "indefinite delay" of their flight to London Stansted.

William says he attempted to fly home on Sunday but his plane was three hours late and the runway needed to be de-iced, only for the plane to malfunction during take-off.

“The pilot abandoned the take-off attempt after 10 seconds of acceleration down the runway,” he says.

With flights fully booked, he says he was "stranded in Prague all night".

After 28 hours of sitting, waiting (and trying to enjoy the snow) it seemed like William was finally about to take off.

But 25 minutes before the flight, William was told the weather meant his flight was indefinitely delayed – this time due to the weather in London.

"The tension has erupted, there are crowds of passengers arguing with staff, children are crying, a lady was sick. And we cannot leave the room we are in," he says.

  5. Power restored to more than 27,000 properties in north-east Englandpublished at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

Around 100 customers are still without power across Yorkshire and the north-east of England, according to the Northern Powergrid.

The network operator says it has restored power to more than 27,000 homes and businesses in the area, which lost power "during the cold snap".

Teams have been working around the clock to fix the electricity supplies, and will continue to work "until all of our customers' power is back on," it says.

You can check the latest outages on the Northern Powergrid website, external.

  7. 'Upset beyond words' - woman tells of flooding frustrationpublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

A woman with her arms folded. She wears glasses and has tattooed arms. Behind her is a flooded garden, which has a car in it and a small house.

Heavy flooding has hit Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire, leaving one woman "upset beyond words" after her home was surrounded by water.

Phoenix Graham lives in Ruskington, and has described the scene as "horrendous", as building materials float around her garden.

She faced damage in October 2023 from Storm Babet, and has been camping upstairs ever since as the house is still a "building site".

Whilst no water has entered her property so far, she says she's "starting to panic a bit".

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue says it has received around 50 calls from people who report water in their properties.

It told BBC Radio Lincolnshire the majority of calls it has received came from people living in the south of the county.

On Facebook, Lincolnshire Police says it has attended "multiple" road traffic incidents across the county due to the severe weather conditions, while Humberside Fire and Rescue reports flooding in North East Lincolnshire at Humber Road in South Killingholme and Killingholme Road in Habrough.

  8. RAC expecting 20 breakdowns a minute on the roadspublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

The RAC says today will "undoubtedly be the busiest of the winter so far".

Spokesman Rod Dennis says: “The impact of the weather, and the fact many people are using their vehicles for the first time after a festive break, means we’re expecting to be 80% busier than normal.

“At our peak today, we will be dealing with upwards of 20 new breakdowns every minute."

As we've been reporting, the adverse weather has caused significant disruption on parts of the road network.

  9. Watch: Woman pulled from submerged car in Leicestershirepublished at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

As we've been reporting, a major incident has been declared in Leicestershire and Rutland, due to severe flooding.

Dramatic scenes are coming from the area, as this video shows one woman being rescued from a car submerged in flood water:

A major incident has been declared across Rutland and Leicestershire due to severe flooding, according to the fire brigade.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service says it's received more than 200 calls since the morning, and has rescued 17 people so far.

Crews continue to attend incidents involving stranded vehicles and flooded homes, the service adds.

It urges locals to take flood warnings seriously and take steps to protect themselves, including turning off electricity, gas and water, moving to higher ground, and checking flood alerts.

Judi Beresford, assistant Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, says "flooding poses a serious risk to lives and property."

"Our control room and crews are working tirelessly to assist those in need and to keep people safe," she says.

She adds they are working with partners to "reduce the impact of this major incident", and asks people to avoid flooded routes and floodwater.

  11. Fresh weather warnings and school closurespublished at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

What does this have to do with climate change?published at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

The New Road cricket ground in Worcester, home of Worcestershire County Cricket Club, flooded in November

The world has warmed by more than 1°C (1.8°F) since pre-industrial times and UK winters are changing as a result.

We are seeing fewer days of snow and fewer frosts too - in fact the Met Office says we are seeing the equivalent of three fewer weeks of ground frost each year than we did half a century ago.

So you may wonder how we are still able to have a cold snap like this in a warming world.

The answer comes down to the difference between weather and climate. Climate is what we expect over a period of years while weather is what we actually get on a day-to-day basis.

While the climate continues to warm overall we will still see short term extremes of both hot and cold weather.

We just expect those cold extremes to become fewer and further between.

One thing that climate change will bring us is more rain. A warmer atmosphere is able to hold more moisture so more intense rainfall is expected to become an increasing feature of UK winters, with the risk of flooding.

Flooding in Rutland in the East Midlands

While many places face warnings for snow, others were hit by heavy rain yesterday and overnight. And, as snow melts, the excess water can contribute to flooding. Here's the latest:

England: In England, the government's flood checker, external shows there are currently 173 warnings and 316 alerts. A warning means there's a potential risk to life. Most of the warnings are concentrated in the Midlands and the south coast.

Wales: There are two warnings - one for the river Usk and the other on the River Towy, and 22 flood alerts. You can check these online., external

Scotland: Currently, there are no alerts for flooding, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency reports, external, though there are widespread warnings for snow and ice.

Northern Ireland: There isn't a similar system in place in Northern Ireland for checking flooding, but you can report a flood by calling 0300 2000 100.

  19. Snow should ease, but new warnings are in placepublished at 11:37 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Elizabeth Rizzini
    Lead Weather Presenter

Snow in the north and rain in the south, along with the strong winds, will ease for many today as low pressure pulls into the North Sea, so it should be a slowly improving picture.

The Met Office has issued a warning for snow and ice for Wales, north-west England and parts of south-west and central southern England which is valid from 17:00 GMT until 10:00 tomorrow morning.

There will be further wintry showers through the evening and overnight period. These showers could be frequent and fall as sleet or snow especially over higher ground.

In Wales there could be up to 5cm of snowfall on higher ground.

A separate snow and ice warning has been issued for Northern Ireland also with possibly 5cm of snow over the Sperrin Mountains. This warning is valid from 15:00 until 11:00 tomorrow.

Up in Scotland, another warning for snow and ice is in place covering northern and western Scotland from 16:00 until 11:00 tomorrow.
