Northern Ireland appears to have escaped the worst of the weather disruption.

But in the Republic of Ireland, around 28,000 premises are without power as a result of adverse weather conditions.

ESB Networks said homes, farms and businesses in counties Limerick, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois and Wicklow were affected.

Our colleagues at Radio 5Live heard from The Sun's travel editor, Lisa Minot, a little earlier this morning.

Speaking of the disruption at airports this morning, Minot underlines that safety is paramount - but adds that early morning is a "very busy time" for airports when normally most flights would be taking off.

"Even though airports are well-designed to make sure they have got the facilities to clear snow etc - it still does mean that there is going to be a delay perhaps in making sure that everything is safe for aircraft[s] to take off."

She adds that in contrast to countries like Norway - these conditions are unusual for us.

"There is a reason why there was amber weather warnings. This is an unusual event and it is going to impact us."

  19. Flights diverted and trains being tested before carrying passengerspublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

Trains and airports are continuing to see disruption this morning, travel expert Simon Calder tells our colleagues on the BBC news channel.

Calder explains that a "dozen" cancellations are in effect at London Waterloo train station - that's due to problems with the electricity supply after heavy rain overnight.

"In Liverpool, trains are being run without passengers to see how they fare", Calder continues.

As we've been reporting this morning - airports including Manchester and Liverpool's John Lennon Airport have closed their runways.

Calder reports that "hundreds" of passengers due to land at Manchester have been diverted. When the BBC spoke with Manchester Airport they said the last plane to land did so at around 06:00 GMT this morning.
