  1. Charlie successfully saved his Christmas!published at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

So after almost 75 hours 'Locked in at Christmas', BBC Radio Somerset's Charlie Taylor saved his Christmas and got back on Santa's nice list by correctly identifying the mystery sound and its location.

That meant he was freed from Santa's lodge and can enjoy his Christmas as he'd originally planned.

The sound which had been baffling us for days was a present conveyor belt in the Winter Wonderland at Wookey Hole - and we couldn't let Charlie head home before going face-to-face with the sound!

  2. HE'S DONE IT!published at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

Question 3 on day 4 finally got Charlie back on Santa’s nice list – freeing him from Santa’s lodge and saving his Christmas.

Debbie and Izzy in Penselwood, Julie and Shaun in Yeovil and Andy in Minehead all helped Charlie get to the point where he asked Santa ‘is the sound the conveyor belt carrying presents in the elves’ workshop at Winter Wonderland at Wookey Hole?’.

And Santa was delighted to tell Charlie ‘By Jingle you’ve done it Charlie! You’re back on the nice list and you’ve saved your Christmas!’

So after four days, Santa’s elves have released Charlie – and he’s headed straight to the hot tub at the lodge!

Charlie's treat for solving the puzzle was a short soak in a hot tub

  3. Day 4 - Question 2published at 10:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

It would appear Charlie Taylor is edging closer to freeing himself from Santa's lodge and saving his Christmas.

This time around he asked Santa 'is the sound some kind of conveyor belt?'.

To which Santa replied 'I'm very impressed - but I need you to be more specific Charlie'.

  4. Day 4 - Question 1 (and Charlie has finally identified the location!)published at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

BBC Radio Somerset's Charlie Taylor normally has to wait until after 09:00 to ask his first question of the day to Santa.

However there was no such wait this morning as yesterday afternoon Charlie earned an extra question that he could put to Santa by forgoing his afternoon nap and walking 10,000 steps around Santa's lodge.

So did he put that question to good use?

He absolutely did... Charlie took inspiration from many listeners and viewers questions and asked Santa 'was this sound recorded within the Winter Wonderland at Wookey Hole?'.

Santa had no hesitation in saying 'Ho Ho, that's it. You've worked out the location. Oh, congratulations Charlie. You're closer to being on the nice list, but you still need to work out the sound!'.

So that means Charlie is now half way to freeing himself from the lodge and saving his Christmas as he's identified where the sound was recorded. He now just needs to identify the sound!

    Image caption,

Charlie can see the outside world for the first time since Monday

Charlie hasn't even been able to see outside since he arrived in the lodge as it would have given away the location, so now he's worked it out we've been able to remove the frosting that was covering the windows!

He still can't physically leave the lodge though until he works out the sound too!

  5. 'Locked in at Christmas' for 72 hourspublished at 08:01 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

BBC Radio Somerset's Charlie Taylor hasn't left Santa's lodge since he arrived there on Monday morning at 08:00.

So if you've just found us - it's probably worth us recapping what exactly is going on!

Charlie is playing 'Locked in at Christmas - the biggest and final game of Sound of the County'.

Charlie needs to try and get back on Santa's good list by working out a mystery sound - and exactly where it was recorded.

  6. Hello from day 4 of 'Locked in at Christmas'published at 06:37 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

Will today be the day that BBC Radio Somerset's Charlie Taylor frees himself from Santa's lodge and gets his Christmas back on track?

Charlie has been locked in at a secret location - and needs to try and get on Santa's nice list by working out a mystery sound and where it was recorded.

Only then will Charlie's Christmas be saved and will he be released from the lodge.

    Quote Message

I'm wearing another different festive jumper today. I've got my Father Christmas one on because it's the biggest and most festive one I've got and that is because I'm thinking today's the last day. That's my thinking there. If I wear this one today then that is manifesting it.

Charlie Taylor, BBC Radio Somerset Breakfast Show presenter

On a regular day in the lodge, Charlie gets five chances to ask a question about the sound - but today he'll get six if he needs them after he successfully completed an extra challenge from Santa yesterday afternoon. You can scroll down on this page to find out more about that.

So here's the recap of what's been asked so far and Santa's responses...

    • Day 1, Question 1 - Is the sound within 5 miles of the coast? No, you're not even close.
    • Day 1, Question 2 - Is it Christmas related? Ho ho ho, yes.
    • Day 1, Question 3 - Is it a Christmas tree wrapping machine? No, that's not it.
    • Day 1, Question 4 - Is it something to do with vehicles? Santa's response was ambiguous but Charlie decided to take it as a no.
    • Day 1, Question 5 - Is it something to do with the post? I'm very impressed but I need you to be more specific Charlie.
    • Day 2, Question 1 - Is it a letter sorting machine? No, that's not it.
    • Day 2 - Question 2 - Is the sound something to do with Royal Mail? No, you're not even close.
    • Day 2, Question 3 - Is the post heading to Santa? You're getting warmer, but the snow around the lodge isn't melting yet.
    • Day 2, Question 4 - Are there reindeer in the place where this sound was recorded? You're part way there, but I need more information than that for it to be a yes.
    • Day 3, Question 1 - Was this question recorded at the reindeer ranch in Chilthorne Domer? No - I think I might need to get my elves to give you a clue. Let me think about that.
    • Day 3, Question 2 - Was this sound recorded in Wookey Hole? You're getting warmer, but the snow around the lodge isn't melting yet.
    • Day 3, Question 3 - Are the reindeer at the location real, living reindeer? No, that's not it.
    • Day 3, Question 4 - Does the sound include mechanical reindeer? No, you're not even close.

Then Charlie spotted a clue that had been left on this very page by Santa.

The first letter of each paragraph in a post spelt Wookey Hole
    Image caption,

Santa left a clue for Charlie Taylor on this page.

That then led Charlie to realise that Wookey Hole was definitely key to freeing himself - and that when Santa earlier responded to a question about the location saying 'you're getting warmer - but the snow around the lodge isn't melting yet' that he was asking for Charlie to be more specific.

That's a theme that continued when Charlie put the final question of day 3 to Santa.

    • Day 3, Question 5 - Was this sound recorded in or within sight of the Paper Mill at Wookey Hole? I'm very impressed - but I need you to be more specific Charlie.

Santa did tell Charlie on Monday morning when he revealed the 'Locked in at Christmas' challenge that he needed to get the answer 'exactly correct' so it seems he's very much sticking to his word.

So Charlie really needs to lock down the specific location where the sound was recorded - and then get back to identifying the sound if he wants to free himself anytime soon!

If you think you can help Charlie identify the mystery sound and exactly where it was recorded, then get in touch! You can WhatsApp him on 08000 321 333. Just start your message with the word 'Somerset'.

His first chance to ask Santa a question today will be between 08:00 and 09:00.

  7. That's it for day 3 of 'Locked in at Christmas'published at 21:16 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Charlie's having a slightly earlier bed time tonight after his 10,000 steps in the lodge challenge - so we've finished the live video stream for the evening.

He'll be back on the BBC Radio Somerset Breakfast Show from 06:00 tomorrow morning when the stream will restart.

Will Thursday be the day that Charlie manages to save his Christmas by working out the mystery sound and where it was recorded? Only time will tell.

  8. 10,000 step challenge finished!published at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Charlie's absolutely smashed his afternoon walking challenge from Santa - and will now be able to ask an additional question tomorrow morning during his Breakfast Show.

That could really make the difference between him making it outside tomorrow or spending yet another night in Santa's lodge.

He's been in there since 08:00 on Monday morning - and needs to correctly identify a sound and where it was recorded to free himself.

You can follow his progress in trying to work that out by scrolling down this live page.

Right now, he's making his dinner. Tonight it's jacket potato with beans, cheese and salad on the menu!

  9. 7,500 steps complete!published at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

BBC Radio Somerset's Charlie Taylor has done 75% of his 10,000 step target.

If he completes the additional challenge, he will earn an extra question that he can put to Santa tomorrow morning.

We appreciate it's quite repetitive if you're following Charlie's progress by clicking watch liveat the top of the page - so to vary things up a little, he's now adding in a star jump every lap!

  10. He's still walking!published at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Charlie's been walking laps of the lodge living area for more than two hours and is now at around 6,500 steps.

A reminder... if he completes 10,000 steps by the end of the day then Santa has given Charlie the chance to ask an extra question between 08:00 and 09:00 tomorrow morning.

That means he'd have six chances to free himself from Santa's lodge tomorrow rather than the usual five.

The way he'll do that is by working out a mystery sound and where it was recorded.

You can support Charlie by getting in touch with yes/no questions which could help him work out the correct answers. Our contact details are at the top of the page.

  11. Charlie's Afternoon Challengepublished at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Charlie will be on the camera a lot more this afternoon than he has the last couple of days - and that's because Santa's set him a difficult additional challenge but with a big reward.

If Charlie completes this challenge by the end of the day then he will get to ask an extra question to Santa tomorrow morning between 08:00 and 09:00 on his BBC Radio Somerset Breakfast Show.

Santa knows Charlie loves keeping fit and so his challenge is to forgo his afternoon nap and complete 10,000 steps by the end of the day. The catch is he still isn't allowed to leave the lodge.

So far in the 9 hours he's been awake he's walked 606 steps, so just another 9394 more to do if he's going to be asking that extra question in the morning.

You'll be able to watch him walking around the lodge throughout the afternoon (and probably evening) - and listen to BBC Radio Somerset by clicking watch live at the top of this page.

  12. Day 3 - Question 5published at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

BBC Radio Somerset's Charlie Taylor is definitely spending another night in Santa's lodge but he's made some real progress in the last few minutes.

Buoyed by his discovery of Santa's clue and responding quickly to a flurry of messages from listeners and viewers around the paper mill building at Wookey Hole, Charlie decided to ask Santa 'Was this sound recorded in or within sight of the Paper Mill at Wookey Hole?'.

Santa gave a positive response when he replied 'I’m very impressed – but I need you to be more specific Charlie'.

Santa did tell Charlie on Monday morning when he revealed the 'Locked in at Christmas' challenge that he needed 'to get it exactly correct' so it seems he's really after specifics now.

  13. Charlie's spotted Santa's Cluepublished at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Charlie's just got very excited in the lodge!

He's found a clue left by Santa on this very page earlier today.

It only took him three hours...

A blog post with the first letter of each paragraph spelling out Wookey Hole
    Image caption,

Santa left a clue on this page earlier today

  14. Day 3 - Question 4published at 12:57 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

The chance of Charlie Taylor freeing himself today is now very slim after Santa's response to question 4 was very definitely negative.

The question inspired by Sandra in Chard was 'Does the sound include mechanical reindeer?'.

Santa didn't hesitate in saying 'you’re not even close'.

So there's now just one more chance for Charlie to get out of Santa's lodge today - but he'd have to identify both the sound and the specific location in just one question.

    It's a big ask!

  15. Day 3 - Question 3published at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

There wasn't a cryptic answer to Charlie's latest question to Santa.

Following Father Christmas' message within the last hour which simply said 'REINDEERS' and inspired by Louise in Wellington, Andy in Minehead and Claire in North Petherton, Charlie decided to ask 'Are the reindeer at the location real, living reindeer?'.

Santa's response was short and sweet, he simply said 'no, that's not it!'.

  16. Breaking Santa Newspublished at 11:30 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

He's been back in touch with Charlie with a short message...

    It simply said 'REINDEERS'!

    Now what could that mean?

Charlie really needs your help if he's going to free himself from the lodge today. He has three more chances to ask a question before 14:00. Otherwise he'll be stuck in the lodge for a third night.

You can send him a WhatsApp now on 08000 321 333. Just start the message with the word 'Somerset'.

Meanwhile Charlie's put on a rather special shirt - he calls it his 'celebratory shirt' as he's feeling hopeful!

  17. Day 3 - Question 2published at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Charlie Taylor's second question of day 2 was inspired by Marilyn who sent in a WhatsApp message.

It was 'Was this sound recorded in Wookey Hole?'.

Santa's response was a little cryptic - he replied 'you’re getting warmer – but the snow around the lodge isn’t melting yet'.

    Interesting...

  18. Can you help Charlie?published at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

We’ve had loads of suggestions in already today which might help Charlie identify the mystery sound and its location.

Obviously as we know by now, he can only put five questions to Santa each day so he’ll have to choose wisely if he wants to free himself from the lodge today.

Only Charlie can pick which specific question he wants to ask each hour between 09:00 and 14:00 – but the more yes/no questions he receives from you the easier the challenge becomes.

Kudos so far must go to Al in Aberdare who is the only person to suggest a question which got a straight ‘yes’ from Santa when he asked ‘is it [the sound] Christmas related?’.

Each and every question posed to Santa helps Charlie though as he tries to save his Christmas.

You can send him a WhatsApp now on 08000 321 333. Just start your message with the word ‘Somerset’.

Helping Charlie doesn’t need to cost you a penny as you can also call the BBC Radio Somerset team for free on 0800 678 1566 and they’ll pass your question onto him.

    Or you can email somerset@bbc.co.uk.

Locked in at Christmas is the biggest and final game of Sound of the County – and the stakes have never been higher.

Each and every minute that goes by, we get closer to the big day!

  19. Day 3 - Question 1published at 09:56 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

Charlie Taylor has put the first question of the day to Santa in an attempt to free himself from the lodge and save his Christmas.

The question he posed 'was this sound recorded at the reindeer ranch in Chilthorne Domer?'.

Charlie had been inundated with suggestions that the sound could have been recorded there - but Santa's response ruled that out when he said 'no – I think I might need to get my elves to give you a clue. Let me think about that'.

So we go again with another question in just under an hour's time.

  20. Charlie's now been 'Locked in at Christmas' for 48 hourspublished at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2024

BBC Radio Somerset's Charlie Taylor arrived at the lodge wearing a blindfold at 08:00 on Monday morning and hasn't been outside since.
