A number of trees were reported to have fallen across the region over the weekend

The sodden ground is causing trees to fall over easier than previous storms this winter, Devon County Council says.

Jen Murphy, from the highways control room, told BBC Radio Devon wind gusts have been "very much sustained" and the saturated ground means tree roots are not as secure.

“We’ve got a lot of ground water already, the ground is really soggy, meaning that where the tree roots are, they’re not held in place as firmly – so trees are falling over easier than they were in previous winds," she says.

"As we got through today, as we have yesterday, even though you might not notice high winds, and it might not feel particularly windy, just beware that there are a lot of trees out there that don’t have that stability that they might usually have."
