  1. Hundreds of schools closed in England, Scotland and Northern Irelandpublished at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    As we have been reporting, severe flooding and snow continue to disrupt air travel, while the weather has also forced schools to close.

    According to Bradford City Council, 184 schools have shut in the area, with many more closures across Yorkshire.

    On Merseyside, five schools in the Wirral have closed, while Lancashire County Council has said more than 15 sites have shut for the day, including in Nelson, Burnley and Rossendale.

    A college in Oldham has also closed its doors.

    In the Midlands, Derbyshire County Council says a number of schools have closed, while in Buxton, three schools have shut due to overnight snowfall in the town.

    In Scotland, more than 30 schools in Aberdeenshire have closed, along with around 20 in the Highland region and a further nine in Moray.

    There are also eight school closures in Northern Ireland.

  2. Extreme cold triggers weather warnings in Irelandpublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    The Irish Meteorological Service, external has issued orange weather warnings for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, and Connacht.

    It's due to concern about extreme cold, ice and snow causing dangerous travel conditions, disruption and delays, as well as animal welfare issues.

    The warning is in place from 20:00 GMT today until 10:00 on Wednesday morning.

    In Northern Ireland, there are yellow weather warnings for ice, snow and travel disruption in Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry.

    These are valid from 15:00 today until midday on Wednesday.

    While wintry showers pour on, the cold snap will continue until the end of this week

    The coldest nights of winter are likely to come on Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures expected to drop as low as -20C.

    Across most parts of the United Kingdom there will be a hard frost with minimum temperatures getting down between -3C and -10C.

    Where there is still snow cover, it could be as cold as -14C to -16C, making Wednesday the coldest night of winter so far.

    Thursday night will be colder still.

    Over the Pennines and the snow fields of Scotland, we're expecting minimum temperatures to be -16C to -20C.

    The last time the UK recorded a temperature that low was on 11 Feb 2021 when the temperature at Braemar in Highland Scotland, fell to -23C.

    Some areas of snow and ice will bring some disruption but overall the weather will turn a little quieter for the rest of the week.

    A number of major incidents have been declared as the UK deals with severe weather.

    The latest pictures below show the differing situations ranging from ice and snow in the north of England, Wales, and Scotland, to flooding in the Midlands.

  5. Liverpool Airport warns of 'many' flight delays as runway re-openspublished at 10:43 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    The runway at Liverpool John Lennon airport has re-opened, but the airport warns that "many" flights are now subject to delays

    "Passengers are advised to check with their airline for the latest information regarding particular flights," the airport writes on X.

    The airport also says to leave plenty of time to travel to the airport, citing problems with "the road leading from the M56 at junction 12 towards both Mersey crossings at Runcorn". , external

  6. Aberdeen Airport resumes flights - but lengthy delays continuepublished at 10:28 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    Earlier we reported Aberdeen Airport also had to suspend flights due to freezing conditions.

    In the last few moments, the airport has said operations have now resumed.

    "We advise passengers to continue to check the status of the their flight with their airline and to take extra care when travelling to the airport," the airport posted on X.

    Departure boards at the Scottish airport show a number of lengthy delays - including one KLM flight which was due to take off for Amsterdam at 06:00 GMT and is now not scheduled to leave until 11:10.

    Snow has continued to blanket parts of Scotland

    New Met Office yellow weather warnings have been issued for snow and ice for 15:00 GMT today until 12:00 Wednesday across northern and western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

    Further snow showers will bring an additional 2-5cm (1-2in) widely across northern and western Scotland with, up to 10cm (4in) over higher ground.

    As temperatures drop, there’ll also be the risk of ice.

  8. In Pictures: Snow coats Liverpool and Manchesterpublished at 10:14 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    We've just seen aerial pictures of Liverpool and Manchester following overnight snowfall.

    Icy stretches are expected to develop due to ongoing wet surfaces following earlier rain and, in some areas, snowmelt.

    Yellow warnings have been issued by the Met Office for both areas.

  9. Liverpool airport terminal opens, runway remains closedpublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    Another update from Liverpool Airport: the terminal has now opened - but the runway remains closed.

    The runway remains closed for snow clearing, the airport says on X, with an updated anticipated opening time of 10:30 GMT.

  10. Aberdeen is the latest airport to suspend all flights amid freezing conditionspublished at 09:56 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    Freezing weather conditions are also affecting flight operations at Aberdeen Airport in Scotland.

    Teams have worked through the night to clear snow from the runway and de-ice the airfield.

    Posting on X, Aberdeen Airport says: "Due to the ongoing freezing conditions it’s been necessary to pause operations. Flights will resume when it is safe to do so."

    The airport is advising passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline and to take extra care when travelling to the airport.

    Several flights arriving at and departing from the airport have already been cancelled, including two to Norway, a KLM flight to Amsterdam, and a British Airways flight to Heathrow.

    This comes amid disruption at other airports, including Manchester, which had to temporarily close both runways in the early hours of this morning, and Bristol, which also had to shut.

    Both have since reopened, but operations at Liverpool remain suspended due to the weather conditions.

    There's some major road closures in the UK due to weather conditions today, including the A1 in Lincolnshire and the A628 Woodhead Pass in South Yorkshire, which connects Sheffield and Manchester through the Peak District.

    A lot of smaller roads across the country have also closed, please check your local authority before travelling.

  12. Flood warnings remain in place for England and Walespublished at 09:32 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    We have been monitoring all of the flood alerts and warnings across the country - let's bring you up to date as of 09:30 GMT:

    • One severe flood warning remains in place for the River Soar in Leicestershire - particularly for caravan parks near Barrow upon Soar
    • Another 178 flood warnings - meaning flooding is "expected" in these areas - have been issued for parts of the north-west of England, the Midlands, Gloucestershire and southern England
    • According to the Environment Agency, 256 flood alerts are in place in parts of England. This means flooding is "possible"
    • In Wales there are 14 flood alerts in place covering areas including Powys, Pembrokeshire and Monmouthshire
    • There are currently no flood warnings in place for Scotland or Northern Ireland

    The CEO of an insurance company in Thurmaston, Leicestershire, has been telling our BBC colleagues about the impact of floodwaters at his business, which resulted in staff being sent home.

    "Never seen anything like it in 10 years," Troy Stevens tells 5 Live Breakfast .

    "Arriving to work yesterday was literally like a river coming down the road, in to the car park, flowing through the doors of our office."

    “We’ve probably not got a lot of sympathy being an insurance firm going through something like this, but it’s put us in the mindset of anybody needing to make a claim in the future."

  14. 'We've seen people disobey road closures and get into difficulty'published at 09:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    Emergency services in Lincolnshire are monitoring the situation across the county as conditions remain treacherous due to low temperatures and flooding.

    Lincolnshire Police's Supt Pat Coates tells the 5 Live Breakfast the situation has "slightly improved" overnight, but there has been further flooding to properties.

    "We are seeing the river levels starting to drop," Coates says. "We do a lot of exercise and practice and sadly over recent years we’ve had lots of experience dealing with major flooding events.

    "So we are prepared. That’s why we declared a major incident so it enabled us to come together and coordinate our response.

    "With road closures, please obey them because the roads aren’t safe to pass. We’ve seen people disobey those road closures and get into difficulty with flood water."

    Liverpool John Lennon Airport is closed for "snow clearing and anti-icing" and is set to re-open at 10:00, the airport says on X.

    "Safety is our uppermost priority so thank you for your patience whilst we clear the concrete surfaces and runway before re-opening," the post says.

    The airport was also closed on Sunday morning, causing subsequent delays to flights throughout the day.

  16. Water continues to rise as residents report phones emitting warning sirenpublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    Residents in Leicestershire have reported their phones emitting a siren to warn of severe flooding, with a major incident being declared by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service late last night.

    The fire service this morning says it has dealt with more than 380 calls in the last 24 hours, attended 56 incidents and evacuated people from 209 homes.

    Giving the latest on the situation in the county, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue's Judi Beresford tells BBC Radio Leicester that water "has continued to rise".

    "The severe flood warning and the emergency text alert was issued by the Environment Agency around 21:00 GMT last night," she said.

    Beresford adds that the River Soar "continues to rise" adding a warning that "water can be incredibly unpredictable".

    Her comments come after East Midlands Ambulance Service declared its first ever critical incident yesterday evening as a result of flooding, adding significantly to existing pressures.

  17. Bristol Airport reopens as departure boards show delayspublished at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    In the last few moments Bristol Airport has said it has fully reopened.

    But, Bristol's departure boards currently show a number of delays to flights which have been scheduled to take off this morning.

    While the airport was forced to temporarily close its runway, it appears only one Ryanair flight - from Kaunas in Lithuania - had to divert to London Stansted.

  18. A look at how railways are affected this morningpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    As we enter peak rush hour, let's look at the current situation on railways:

    • National Rail says poor weather is impacting Northern, Great Western Railway and Merseyrail services
    • Rail replacement buses are in place between Peterborough and Leicester due to flooding block all lines - disruption is expected to continue until midday
    • A landslip in Shropshire has resulted in all lines being closed between Chester and Shrewsbury, according to Transport for Wales
    • The London Underground has a good service on most lines, apart from the Piccadilly Line which has severe delays and is partially closed between Uxbridge and Rayners Lane due to "damage caused by leaf fall"

    The flooding here is very evident and you can see most of the high street is still under a good few inches of water.

    Many businesses are still shut and have boarded up the front of their buildings hoping to stop too much water from getting inside.

    We have also just had fire and rescue crews pass through here - they have extended the cordon to nearby Mountsorrel, where they told me they are having to do a rescue for someone trapped in a car.

    Evacuations have also taken place in nearby Barrow upon Soar. This is in addition to the 200 plus flood warnings in place in the UK.
