Some of us woke up on Tuesday morning to a fresh covering of snow in northern and western parts of the UK, especially in northern Scotland, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and the West Country, where there has been a few centimetres of new snow.

This area of snow is currently moving east into central and southern England.

There are also icy surfaces just about anywhere across the UK but more so in the west where wintry showers continued through the night.

Weather will be relatively quiet on Tuesday even though we’ll still have occasional rain, sleet and snow showers passing through at times.

There’ll be some wintry sunshine. The quieter weather will be welcome news for those experiencing flooding and with no significant rain in the coming days, the flood waters and warnings should start to subside.

  3. One danger to life alert and over 200 flood warnings issued in Englandpublished at 07:10 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Over 200 flood warnings - including one severe warning - and some 300 flood alerts are in place across England this morning.

The warnings mostly apply to parts of Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, and Peterborough, with parts of Cheshire, Yorkshire, and the south coast also affected.

The severe warning - indicating significant disruption and danger to life - applies to part of the River Soar near the village of Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire, where a number of caravan parks were evacuated Monday.

The Environment Agency said flooding of homes in the village was expected to continue and river levels were set to remain high until Wednesday.

The less severe flood alerts are in place across central, north-west, south-west, and southern England as well as Yorkshire, while a further 13 alerts are in place in southern and north-eastern Wales.

For the third time in as many days, Manchester Airport has had to temporary close both of its runways.

Earlier today, the airport posted on X to say both had to be shut due to heavy snow. The runways have now reopened, but the airport warned the earlier closure would cause delays.

A number of flights bound for Manchester also had to be diverted last night, according to the popular real-time tracking website Flightradar24.

Between 22:00 GMT and 01:00, at least 16 planes were forced to land at other airports including Liverpool, Birmingham, Edinburgh, East Mildlands, Stansted and Prestwick.

Looking at the picture this morning - only one flight out of Manchester has been cancelled while others have some delays.

Passengers travelling through Manchester have been asked to check before they travel and to allow for extra time when making their journey.

If you are caught up in the disruption, here is a guide to everything you need to know about the duty airlines have to you.

It’s yet another day of bad weather for the UK – but what happened yesterday?

Major incidents: There were two major incidents declared due to heavy flooding. One in Leicestershire and Rutland, and the other in Lincolnshire.

Trapped children: 50 primary school pupils were rescued in Edenham, Lincolnshire, after the main road outside their school was flooded, leaving them stuck inside the building.

Snowfall: Heavy snowfall hit the north of England and parts of Scotland, which caused power outages, school closures and freezing temperatures.

Travel disruption: Because of the snow and flooding, there were travel disruptions across buses, rail and roads, including Manchester Airport, which shut its runways temporarily.

Politics: Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said his thoughts were with all those affected by the flooding and thanked "responders working hard to keep communities safe".

In the Commons, Environment Minister Emma Hardy told MPs flooding was "a personal priority" for her, adding that the Environment Agency was particularly concerned about Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire.
