Russia launched 85 drones at Ukraine overnight as Trump and Putin met in Alaska, Ukraine’s Air Force says this morning.

The air force says 61 of the drones were intercepted and shot down.

The Sumy, Chernihiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions were targeted, but there were no reports of casualties.

Meanwhile Russia says it destroyed nearly 30 Ukrainian drones overnight.

This meeting in Alaska has not produced what President Trump had been hoping for – a Russian ceasefire.

It gave President Putin plenty, though: a red-carpet welcome, a day in the geo-political limelight, and the chance to share a stage with the leader of the world’s most powerful country.

Lots of pluses, then, for Moscow – without Moscow making any noticeable compromise or concessions over its war in Ukraine.

In recent weeks President Trump has been threatening to take a tougher approach to Russia over its unwillingness to cease fire in Ukraine.

So far, though, the White House hasn’t followed through on its threat.

At the end of July Donald Trump set Vladimir Putin an ultimatum – end the war in Ukraine within 10 days or face even more sanctions.

The Kremlin leader did not stop fighting.

Instead of sanctions he got an invitation from Donald Trump to a summit.

More now for Volodymyr Zelensky's statement - his first public comments since Trump and Putin's talks in Alaska.

President Zelensky says he has had a “long and substantive” conversation with President Trump - first one-on-one and then with European leaders.

In a written statement, Zelensky says the Ukrainian and US presidents spoke for about an hour one-on-one.

The statement is relatively short on substance but very rich on positive sentiment - a reflection of Ukraine’s recent efforts to maintain good relations with Trump after the two leaders’ disastrous Oval Office meeting in February.

Ukrainians were deeply unhappy to be left out of the summit in Alaska, and Zelensky emphasises in the statement that all three leaders should be present for the next round of talks.

He also stresses the importance of European leaders being present “at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America”.

The presence of European leaders is seen by many Ukrainians as a bulwark against the possibility of Trump - who is known to be susceptible to flattery - being influenced by Putin.

It says: "It was a lengthy call — initially between Presidents Zelensky and Trump, after which the European leaders joined in."

As a reminder, Zelensky wasn't involved in Friday's discussions between Trump and Putin. The US president has previously suggested there could be a second meeting - this time involving Zelensky - if the initial talks go well.

  14. What we're still waiting forpublished at 06:59 British Summer Time 16 August

With the UK and Europe just waking up, we are still waiting on some key players to respond to Friday's talks:

    Volodymyr Zelensky

We haven't yet heard anything from the Ukrainian president, who wasn't invited to the summit in Alaska.

After a meeting with European leaders earlier this week, Trump promised his first phone call would be to the Ukrainian leader.

Keir Starmer - and other European leaders

The UK prime minister, who has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, is yet to make any public comment on the summit.

Zelensky paid a visit to Downing Street earlier in the week where the two leaders said they shared a "powerful sense of unity".

    Second summit?

A couple of days ago, Trump touted the possibility of a second meeting involving himself and Putin - if talks on Friday went well.

This, he said, would include Zelensky.

Speaking after talks today, Putin suggested he could meet with Trump again, "next time in Moscow". We've not yet heard any further detail about any further talks.

Starmer invited Zelensky to Downing Street in the run-up to the summit as a show of support

Right now it’s a waiting game for the UK government. Here in Downing Street discussions are ongoing about how best to respond to the overnight talks.

The unknowns - unusual for a summit like this - have made it much more difficult for ministers to respond quickly.

I have spoken to a senior Downing Street source within the last hour, but they were keeping tight-lipped about how the rest of the day might play out.

Last night the Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty told BBC Radio 4 that Ukraine must be able to take decisions about its own future - and that position is unlikely to change.

In recent months Prime Minister Keir Starmer has co-ordinated some foreign policy decisions with allies such as France, Germany and Canada. It wouldn’t surprise me if conversations with those countries are also happening right now.

  16. A huge contrast from the Oval Office meeting with Zelenskypublished at 06:23 British Summer Time 16 August

    Joel Gunter
    Reporting from Kyiv

Oleksandr Merezhko, the chair of Ukraine’s parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, tells me this morning he thinks the most striking aspect of the summit was Trump’s warm treatment of Putin.

“In my mind I cannot help but think back to this disgusting scene in the Oval Office – the meeting with Zelensky,” he says, referring to Trump’s February clash with the Ukrainian president at the White House.

    Media caption,

Watch Zelensky, Vance and Trump get into angry exchange over Ukraine war in February's Oval Office meeting

“The Ukrainian president was treated very aggressively. And last night we watched the enemy of the United States, Putin, being treated warmly, welcomed as a huge personality.”

From here in Kyiv, Trump’s deference to Putin looks like a humiliation for the US, Merezhko says.

But it is also a blow for Ukraine. “The United States is our ally. Putin is an enemy, a dictator,” the MP says. “It reminds us again that we can only really rely on ourselves.”

Merezhko says he is also struck that it was only two months ago that an American citizen was killed by a Russian strike on Kyiv.

“America has always been proud that the president stands for its citizens,” he says. “Now here is the president, shaking hands with someone responsible for killing an American citizen.”

Five hours ago, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin departed the summit in Alaska without reaching an agreement to end the fighting in Ukraine.

    Here’s what you missed:

    • A warm reception for Putin: The two leaders disembarked their planes in Anchorage just after 11:00 local time. The red carpet was rolled out, a long handshake was shared. Putin could be seen smiling as he and Trump were driven away in "The Beast", the US presidential car
    • 'Pursuing peace': The leaders' meeting lasted three hours, with two key advisers joining each country's president. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, President Zelensky reiterated that Kyiv must be included in talks on its future, having been excluded from Friday's - so, who was at the table?
    • A non-press conference: With little warning, journalists assembled for what was billed as a joint news conference. Trump gestured to Putin to speak first, before making his own brief remarks. Neither president took questions
    • Light on Ukraine: Putin gave an extensive address. He made minimal reference to Ukraine, other than saying he was "sincerely interested" in putting an end to the conflict
    • No deal: Trump told reporters there were still points of disagreement and "there is no deal until there is a deal". "We didn't get there" despite progress, he added. An hour later, the presidents returned to their planes and departed. In an interview with Fox News, Trump urged Zelensky to "make a deal"
    • The view from Kyiv: We're yet to hear any reaction from Zelensky or any European allies, but that should start landing shortly. Stay with us for further updates and analysis throughout the day

Donald Trump hand-delivered a letter to Vladimir Putin from his wife, Melania Trump, at the summit in Alaska, which raised the plight of children in Ukraine and Russia, White House officials told Reuters news agency.

The first lady, who was born in Slovenia, was not on the trip, but the officials said her letter mentioned the abductions of children during the war.

The government in Kyiv estimates that at least 19,500 Ukrainian children have been deported, external and forcibly displaced from their homes to Russia and Russian-occupied territories since the full scale invasion began in February 2022.

The issue is a hugely sensitive one here in Ukraine, where many believe that no peace deal should be made without an agreement for the return of all those abducted.

In 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin and his children's rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova for the alleged unlawful deportation of children.
