FBI: 'Anti-ICE' message appeared on ammunition from Dallas ICE facility shooting

  1. Investigation continues as three dead and another in critical conditionpublished at 18:54 BST

We’ll soon be bringing our coverage of the shooting to a close, but before we do, let’s recap the key moments from today.

At 06:40 local time (12:40 BST), Dallas Police Department received a call requesting officer assistance after a shooting at an ICE facility.

The Department of Homeland Security says the gunman opened fire from an elevated position. Three people have died, including two ICE detainees and the attacker, who is said to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No ICE agents or law enforcement were hurt.

While the motive is still unclear, FBI Director Kash Patel said early stages of the investigation point to an "ideological motive" as he shared photos of bullets with "ANTI-ICE" written on them.

Patel said violence towards ICE facilities and officials "has to end", adding that the FBI and partners will lead investigative efforts.

At the moment, law enforcement is continuing its investigation, and the BBC will share updates with you in our news piece here.

Meanwhile, we are closing our live coverage.

    Thank you for joining us.

The shooting happened at ICE's field office in Dallas, which covers north Texas and all of Oklahoma.

The office, just off a busy highway in north Dallas, is "not a detention facility", Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News.

According to CBS, the BBC's US partners, the facility is a temporary holding centre where detainees are kept before being transferred to a larger facility. "No detainee shall be confined in a hold room for more than 12 hours," according to an ICE detention standards manual., external

An ICE report from August says the Dallas facility also houses Enforcement and Removal Operations, the division responsible for arresting, detaining, and deporting foreign nationals.

Last month, a 36-year-old man was arrested outside the facility after he said he had a bomb in his backpack and showed officers what he said was a detonator on his wrist. The man was later arrested.

An assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has just shared previously unseen images, external from inside the Dallas ICE facility.

Bullet holes can be seen in an office window, and others have pierced a glass-encased American flag.

"Like everyone else, our ICE law enforcement officers just want to go home to their families at night. They are fathers and mothers. Sons, and daughters, brothers and sisters," writes Tricia McLaughlin.

Apart from the office, the DHS also says earlier that the gunman fired at an unmarked van near the facility.

  4. More politicians offer condolences to victimspublished at 18:24 BST

Let's take a look at more reactions from politicians across the political spectrum.

"I ask you to pray for our law enforcement officers, particularly those charged with enforcing immigration laws and keeping the border secure. I also ask you to pray for any victims of this senseless, politically motivated shooting," Republican Senator Lindsay Graham says. "These must stop."

Republican Senator for Iowa Chuck Grassley says he is praying for those affected by the violence.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says officials will keep doing "everything in our power to combat the alarming increase of targeted attacks against ICE and all law enforcement by evil, twisted individuals".

Gabrielle Giffords, a former Democratic Representative for Arizona, offers her support for the families of the victims, adding that "it’s clear our country is in the middle of a gun crime crisis".

She also criticises the Trump administration's "cruel and inhumane immigration policy".

    • Just a reminder - while the FBI says there are "ANTI-ICE" engravings on bullets, officials have not yet confirmed the motive for the shooting

    Breaking

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has just given another update on casualties from the shooting in Dallas.

It says that, apart from the gunman who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, there were three other victims - two ICE detainees have been killed, while another is in a critical condition in hospital.

DHS adds that the gunman fired at an unmarked van near the facility, and at least one of the victims ran out of the vehicle and tried to get help from inside the ICE facility.

The gunman was positioned at an elevated location and opened fire from the rooftop of a lawyer’s office across the street from the ICE detention facility on Empress Street, DHS says.

Earlier, there was confusion over whether two or three people had died, including the attacker.

A short while ago, the Fort Worth Police Department - from the city next to Dallas - also responded to the shooting.

As well as urging locals to "say something" if they "see something", the department says:

"The violence that occurred in Dallas, Texas this morning is uncalled for and moments like this are deeply disturbing as it creates more division in our community at a time when the focus needs to be on how we can come together."
