It’s the end for the Conservatives in Bridgend.

Labour re-gained the seat it lost in 2019, with Reform second. The Tories came third.

The Tories were thrown into turmoil in the constituency weeks out from the election when their candidate withdrew over "wholly inappropriate" comments he posted about women online.

Anita Boateng was announced as the party’s candidate at the last moment.

Despite one of the lowest turnouts in this seat’s history, Chris Elmore is the new MP for Bridgend.

"I think local issues have played a part in this result," he said.

  2. Welsh Lib Dems optimistic in Breconpublished at 03:44 British Summer Time 5 July

The Welsh Liberal Democrats are feeling hopeful that the party can gain Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe.

The party has held the seat in its previous guise of Brecon and Radnorshire in the past.

There had been gossip from Labour quarters that the Lib Dems might have some success there.

A Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesman said the party is "feeling optimistic that they have regained a seat in Wales".

The former First Minister Mark Drakeford says he's very “sympathetic” to his successor Vaughan Gething.

Drakeford has been giving his first substantial interviews to BBC Wales and Newyddion S4C since he stepped down in March.

Gething is embattled in a row over Labour leadership campaign donations.

Drakeford, the Member of the Senedd for Cardiff West, says: "Vaughan has had a very tough start to his time as first minister.

"I feel hugely personally sympathetic for him. He is a much much better person than he is portrayed sometimes."

    Crabb

As Cairns has found, tonight is not a good one to be a former Welsh secretary - they are dropping like flies.

Cairns is out, Sir Robert Buckland too and David TC Davies conceded he’d probably lost as soon as the exit poll dropped.

However it's all smiles at the moment for Stephen Crabb ahead of the decision in his Mid and South Pembrokeshire constituency.

Just him and Simon Hart remain, can they hang on?

The Tories have not held a single seat in Wales yet this evening, with every one going to Labour.

Surrounded by his team, the former Welsh secretary left the count in Barry quickly after the results were announced.

Despite hoping for personal backing from the constituents he has represented in parliament since 2020, Cairns lost to Labour candidate Karishna Narayan.

Both parties saw votes lost to Reform, who came third. This seat has changed with the ruling party since 1992.

As the incoming MP, Narayan paid tribute to his predecessor and promised to bring "change" to the Vale of Glamorgan.

But he warned that it wouldn’t happen overnight.

Previously he served as a member of Welsh Assembly and became Secretary of State for Wales in 2016.

He resigned from the Cabinet in November 2019 following a row over a former aide's role in the "sabotage" of a rape trial.

Cairns insisted he did not know the details of the case and he was cleared of breaking the ministerial code.

More from Mark Drakeford from a little earlier, who was asked about whether having a Labour government in both Westminster and Wales will see more money come to Wales.

He says "the opportunities that Vaughan [Gething] will have will be a lot better than I and Carwyn [Jones] had".

"It would have been a lot better for me to have had the chance to collaborate with a Labour government in Westminster.

"Now, with Vaughan, there will be period of time for us to do that - and that is great.

"I think there will be more powers to come to Wales and when the economy grows, more money will come to us too. The relationship will be a lot better and that will be good for us."

Reform repeating runners up placepublished at 02:47 British Summer Time 5 July

    David Deans
    BBC Wales political reporter

Reform has come second in several of the seats declared so far.

Labour has won all of the seats called, with Nigel Farage's party second in Bridgend, Torfaen, Swansea West and Pontypridd.

It is not expected that Reform will win any MPs in Wales, but politicians in the Senedd will be looking to the next elections in 2026, when a new and more proportional election system will be in place.
