  1. Fireworks in Boston?published at 01:49 British Summer Time 5 July

    Tim Iredale
Political editor, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

Boston on the 4th of July may sound like a dream assignment, but the Peter Paine Performance Centre in the dead of night is a world away from the fireworks lighting up the sky across the Atlantic.

However, the ‘original’ Boston could see some political pyrotechnics in the next few hours.

The mood here is tense. Reform UK activists believe they have a good chance of snatching Boston & Skegness from the Conservatives.

But until the ballot papers start to pile up, no one here can make any firm predictions on who will represent this part of Lincolnshire in parliament.

Nic Dakin is hoping to be re-elected as the MP for Scunthorpe having held the seat from 2010 to 2019

Labour candidate Nic Dakin has called Scunthorpe's turnout of 53% “disappointing”. He said: “All politicians want to see the highest turnout possible.

"It's disappointing if people have felt that they don't want to carry out their democratic right to choose their MP, and who governs the country and sets the direction of the country for the next five years."

Cllr Tom Ashton, deputy leader of the Lincolnshire Conservatives, has given his thoughts on the exit polls

The deputy leader of the Lincolnshire Conservatives, Councillor Tom Ashton, has told the BBC his party is "unlikely to have a happy encounter with the ballot box".

Giving his reaction to the exit polls, Mr Ashton said voters have "arrived at a point where they want a change" and the situation is "exactly what happened 14 years ago" when the Conservatives won the general election and later formed a coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

Speaking from the election count in Boston, Mr Ashton also said the chances of incumbent Matt Warman being re-elected is "too close to call" and he is "hopeful but not confident".

With the far flung rural polling stations in the Bridlington and The Wolds constituency it took two and a half hours before all the votes arrived at the leisure centre here in Driffield.

The votes are almost ready to be counted here for both the member of parliament and also a seat on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council left vacant by Charlie Dewhirst. The former deputy leader of the council is standing for the Conservative party seat in this newly formed constituency.

Former MP for East Yorkshire Sir Greg Knight stood down before the election.

Independent candidate Tom Cone is at his first ever election count and accidentally strayed into a restricted area trying to get the perfect selfie. His aim tonight is to win enough votes to get his deposit back.

  5. Turnout in Sleaford and North Hykehampublished at 01:21 British Summer Time 5 July

This just in from reporter Leanne Crawford:

Turnout in Sleaford and North Hykeham is 64.46%.

This is lower than 2019. 48,761 people voted.

  6. Turnout lower in Lincolnpublished at 01:10 British Summer Time 5 July

Our reporter Sharon Edwards says counting is under way in Lincoln where the turnout is 58.53%. That is lower than the 67.74% turnout in 2019.

  7. Hull North turnoutpublished at 01:08 British Summer Time 5 July

Our reporter Sally Fairfax tells us the turnout in the Hull North constituency was 50.9% while in Hull East it was 41%.

  8. Not a happy meal?published at 01:05 British Summer Time 5 July

    James Hoggarth
    BBC Radio Humberside

We're awaiting the final boxes at the count in Beverley, as some are due from the remotest parts of the East Riding including Sunk Island. Everything will start once they've arrived.

One thing that I've learned this evening is that the delivery drivers are under very strict instructions that they can't bring them to Beverley Leisure Centre via a McDonalds' drive-thru.

One driver when asked by a jovial officer from Humberside Police said "no, that's the rule". He denied picking up a milkshake (whilst smirking).

    Suzy Lawson
    BBC Look North

We’re in for a long night at the Louth and Horncastle count, with the result expected to come in some time around 06:00 BST None of the candidates for the Conservatives, Labour or Reform are in the main sports hall of the Meridian Leisure Centre yet. It’ll be interesting to gauge the mood of Victoria Atkins, the incumbent Conservative MP and Health Secretary, following the exit poll.

  10. An update from Hullpublished at 00:29 British Summer Time 5 July

    Richard Madden
    BBC News

A bit of news coming in from the Guildhall in Hull.

We're being told the counting of votes for the constituencies of Hull North and Cottingham and Hull East will be starting soon.

One Labour councillor has also told the BBC their party has won in every ward in Hull West.

The verification is well underway at Casterton College for the Rutland and Stamford constituency and the first ballot box arrived just a few minutes after the polls closed.

It’s the first time the count has been held here and, in fact, the first time Rutland County Council has led on a count with the new boundary changes - but all is running smoothly so far.

We're in the sports hall, looking more like mid-exam season with rows of desks and counters all facing the same direction, but with a much more relaxed feel. However, while the boundary may have changed, it's not expected the party will, with Conservatives predicted to retain an MP here.

  12. All in in Goole and Pocklingtonpublished at 00:20 British Summer Time 5 July

Our reporter Linsey Smith tells us all 84 ballot boxes have now arrived at Goole Market Hall for the count for the Goole and Pocklington constituency.

    The count in Beverley
    Image caption,

The votes are being counted at Beverley Leisure Centre

Under the weird sodium strip lighting of Beverley Leisure Centre this feels more like a giant tanning booth than a constituency count. Fittingly so, because this contest could be something of a scorcher.

Graham Stuart has been the Conservative MP for the area since 2005 and in the last general election his majority felt as big as the vast Westwood that surrounds this pretty town - a whopping 20,000.

But in the weeks leading up to tonight the polls - and the pubs - have suggested that his Labour rival Margaret Pinder could be on the brink of an historic victory. Even campaign letters from Mr Stuart have described this contest as being 'on a knife edge'. We shall see.

The counting had barely started here when fears of a red-eyed dawn recount were being mooted by some. At least we'll all end up with a lovely tan.

The anticipation is building at One NK Leisure Centre in North Hykeham

The ballot boxes have started to arrive at the ONE NK Leisure Centre and the count for the Sleaford and North Hykeham constituency is under way.

The evening got off to a jolly start when everyone in the hall sang ‘happy birthday’ to the North Kesteven District Council staff whose birthday celebrations had been put on hold as a result of the election!

Most of the candidates missed the sing-song though; it looks like they’re not planning on arriving until a little later on.

They’ll be aware we’re not expecting a declaration until about 04:00 BST – but this is just an estimate; lots of factors come into play, including the latest boundary change.

About 21% of the former Sleaford and North Hykeham constituency is now in the new Grantham and Bourne constituency, meaning there are up to 21,000 fewer ballot papers to count here.

There’ve been several changes to this constituency since it was formed in 1997 – but one thing that’s remained consistent: it’s always been held by the Conservatives. Will that change tonight or can Dr Caroline Johnson hold on to her seat?

Nick Smith from Reform UK in Lincolnshire thinks his party could take "two or three" seats in the county

We're told the Reform UK candidates in Boston are in a "jubilant" mood after the exit polls predicted some big gains for their party and there is a similar feeling in Lincoln.

Nick Smith, the party's Lincolnshire organiser, has told the BBC: "We didn't do this to the Conservatives, they did it to themselves".

Mr Smith also told us he thinks the party could take "two or three seats" in Lincolnshire tonight but would only specify Boston and Skegness where Richard Tice is standing.

When asked if Reform has split the right vote he said "we're the only right wing party left".

Lincoln Reform UK candidate Jamie-Lee Miller says immigration has been the top issue on the doorsteps "with the cost of living coming a very close second".

At The Pods Leisure Centre in Scunthorpe, all ballot boxes have now arrived.

Counting and verification is in full flow, as candidates are pacing up and down the tables for frequent updates.

Conservative Holly Mumby-Croft's win in 2019 ousted Labour's incumbent Sir Nik Dakin, who has stood again in this election hoping to win his seat back.

Many voters in this constituency will have voted regarding jobs and the future of the local steelworks in this general election.

South Holland and The Deepings is about as blue as it gets! It’s the safest Conservative seat in the country.

The long-standing Conservative Sir John Hayes appears calm and composed watching the continuous flow of ballot boxes arriving.

At the 2019 general election this constituency recorded the highest Conservative share of the vote since 1970.

There’s a long wait ahead for the candidates and everybody here is waiting patiently for the results.

  18. All go in Goolepublished at 23:40 British Summer Time 4 July

    Linsey Smith
    BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

Counting is in full flow inside the old Goole Market Hall for the seat of Goole and Pocklington.

It’s the first time this seat has been contested: it was established in the 2023 boundary review.

Although ballot boxes started arriving at about 22:15 BST, they are still flowing in. The rural nature of this constituency means some of the boxes have to travel from villages miles away from this count.

Hoping to win will be Conservative Candidate Sir David Davis. He has been keeping the abolished Haltemprice and Howden seat warm since 1997. A veteran MP and former tory heavyweight, he most notably served as Brexit Secretary for two years.

As I write this, he has not arrived yet - but there’s still time. This result is not expected until 04:00 BST.

BBC reporter Harry Parkhill is keeping an eye on proceedings at the Peter Paine Sports Centre in Boston

There’s a swarm of national and local reporters here in Peter Paine Sports Centre in Boston where ballot boxes have begun arriving and verification of votes has begun.

The media circus is in town because of one man – Richard Tice. The co-founder of Reform UK, and until the start of the election campaign, he was the leader too.

And the Reform camp is jubilant here.

On seeing the exit poll suggesting the party may win 13 MPs, one party member swore loudly. Another described it as an “absolute belter”.

But will Boston and Skegness return Richard Tice as an MP? Conservative incumbent Matt Warman took 76.7% of the vote in 2019 – a huge number of people need to go to Reform to hand them the win they really want.

  20. All go in Grimsbypublished at 23:20 British Summer Time 4 July

    Lara King
    BBC Radio Humberside

Verification is underway in the beautiful surroundings of the historic Grimsby Town Hall. It's a hushed atmosphere with some of the candidates eagerly waiting for the counting to begin.

We'll see two results here tonight, for two new constituencies; Grimsby and Cleethorpes and also Brigg and Immingham.

The former Great Grimsby MP Melanie Onn is standing after she lost her seat in 2019. The former Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers is in the running for the new Brigg and Immingham constituency.
