  1. Our lives will never be the same, Jay's mum says in pen portraitpublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 25 July

A pen portrait is now being read out about Jay Slater by his mother Debbie.

"Jay had a wonderful life, full of fun, and he was always a joy to be around," she says, describing her son as “popular”.

He played football at a young age, and at 16 secured an apprenticeship in bricklaying, she continues.

Jay had a confident smile, and made new friends wherever he went, she adds. He would make friends at every opportunity.

But that "all changed in June 2024," she says, becoming emotional.

"He was very loved, and our hearts are broken. Our lives will never be the same without Jay in it."

She asks for Jay to be remembered as "a real person".

"He did touch the hearts of the nation and that overwhelms us," she says.

"We now ask you to let Jay rest in eternal peace," she concludes, in tears.

  4. What happened yesterday?published at 10:07 British Summer Time 25 July

Thursday's hearing first heard about Jay Slater's movements the night of 16 June last year.

He was on the strip in Playa de las Americas in Tenerife with friends and people he had met that night. His friend, Bradley Geoghan said at one point Slater couldn't stand up. His other friend Lucy Law said Slater was "visibly intoxicated" but not "in a state".

Law and another friend, Brandon Hodgson, wanted to go home but Slater wanted to keep drinking, the inquest heard.

Slater asked to go to an Airbnb with Ayub Qassim and Steven Roccas in Masca, a 40 minute drive away, the inquest heard. He had met Qassim and Roccas earlier in the week.

In the car, Slater sent a Snapchat to friends claiming he had stolen a luxury watch and was going to sell it. Neither Qassim, nor Geoghan and Law saw him with a watch, they said.

Geoghan said he did not get the sense his friend was worried, scared or in any trouble at any point.

  5. Jay Slater inquest verdict due this morningpublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 25 July

    Fiona Trott
    Reporting from the inquest

I’m sitting in court one where the hearing is due to resume in about ten minutes.

It feels more relaxed than yesterday when the court staff had a tough job on their hands managing journalists, witnesses and most importantly, Jay’s family.

Today, we all know what to do.

When Jay’s dad left yesterday, he appeared less tense than at the start of the hearing.

I’m wondering how the family feel today. It’s expected to be a short hearing.

Stay with us and we’ll keep you updated.

We're resuming our live coverage of the inquest into the death of Jay Slater, who went missing in Tenerife on 17 June 2024.

His body was found in a remote part of the Spanish island, near Masca, on 15 July. He had been taken to this area, 40 minutes away from the area he had been partying at, by people he'd met on holiday.

Slater appeared to decide to try and walk back to his apartment after failing to catch a bus, the inquest has heard, before his phone died.

The case gained a huge amount of notoriety, with online sleuths sharing theories over his disappearance.

His cause of death was likely a severe head injury, the inquest heard in May.

On Thursday the inquest, led by coroner Dr James Adeley, heard from Slater's friends and one of the last people to see him alive.

Today, Adeley will deliver a summary of the case and evidence, going through the facts and we expect to then hear a conclusion.

The hearing, which isn't televised, will begin at 10:00 BST. We have a reporter in the room, and will bring you live updates here, stay tuned.

  7. Questions remain after latest hearing at Slater inquestpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 24 July

This was the day Jay’s mother waited for.

A man who was one of the last people to see her son alive and who she asked the coroner to find, was finally giving evidence.

Ayub Qassim was chatty and relaxed and apologised to the court for swearing.

But did he give her the answers she needed?

He was asked about a stolen watch that Slater referred to in Snapchat messages. It felt like the coroner was trying to understand how significant that was – is it why he went to Qassim’s holiday rental up in the mountains from where he went missing?

Neither Qassim, nor Jay’s friends Bradley Geoghan and Lucy Law saw him with a watch, they said.

The hearing revealed other challenges in finding the facts. The police statements from over a year ago were translated into Spanish and, for this hearing, back to English again.

Another challenge was that the witnesses themselves were all out having a good time on 16 June, and had been drinking for hours or had taken drugs.

Who knows what the family felt after today’s evidence, but it’s evidence they didn’t have a year ago.

We'll be back here covering day two of the inquest at 10:00 BST tomorrow. Thanks for joining us.

The inquest into the death of Jay Slater resumed this morning, with further details shared on the circumstances surrounding Slater's disappearance and death.

Let's take a look at a timeline of the events:

    • A police search was then launched, with officers using search dogs to look through small buildings and villages near the area where his last phone signal was traced
    • After 29 days, a body was found in the Masca area - it was later identified as Slater's
    • A post-mortem examination revealed his body had injuries consistent with a fall from height onto rocky ground

The inquest also heard how several attempts to contact two other witnesses - Slater's friend Brandon Hodgson and Steven Roccas - were unsuccessful

  9. Coroner ends today's sessionpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 24 July

The coroner says he will not be able to compose a sum up of the evidence this evening before concluding today's session.

The inquest will resume on Friday at 10:00 BST.

  10. Friend made last call to Slater, officer sayspublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 24 July

Det Sgt Nick Spencer of Lancashire Police is now giving evidence about what steps he took to trace the digital footprint of Slater's phone and his last movements alive.

The officer shows a spreadsheet that includes the numbers Slater called before his disappearance.

He says Slater's last call was with Lucy Law - who we heard from earlier - and it disconnected with the "most likely outcome" being that the phone had died. The battery was at 1% at 08:52 local time on 17 June 2024.

They also pull up a map to show where the phone was last used.

  11. Coroner shares maps locating where Slater's body was foundpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 24 July

The coroner continues to take the inquest through Slater's actions on the morning of 17 June.

Those at the inquest are shown maps pinpointing where Slater's body was found.

The coroner explains Slater walked from Masca for about an hour, according to Google maps data, before leaving the road.

His bag was found at a little distance from his body with his phone and some gas cannisters inside.

The mountain rescue group said they could not explain why Slater would have decided to go down the ravine where the terrain is "rough" and "unstable".

An assessment was made that the death was a result of an "accidental fall".

  12. Inquest shown video of mountains taken by Slater on day of disappearancepublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 24 July

The inquest has resumed and we are hearing from the coroner. He brings up a video posted by Slater the morning he went missing.

In it, the camera pans around showing scenery of large mountains and a driveway with a parked car as the sun rises.

The coroner says Slater took this video from the steps of the Airbnb he was at.

A blanket can be seen on Slater as he smokes a cigarette, the coroner says.

The coroner moves onto a mountain rescue report, which explains that they were made aware of a problem at 20:00 local time on 17 June 2024.

Slater was reported missing at 09:00 that morning, the coroner says.

The search took 29 days, with the first 13 days of the search including a variety of emergency services, drones, dogs and helicopters.

As the inquest takes a short break, here's a recap of the evidence that was given in the latest session:

As we've just reported, the coroner indicated to the court that he would sum up the evidence heard on Friday, and was thinking about coming to a short form conclusion in this case.

  14. Coroner indicates he will sum up case on Fridaypublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 24 July

Before the hearing paused for a break, coroner Dr James Adeley indicated he would hear the rest of the evidence today and sum up the evidence heard on Friday.

He added he was thinking about coming to a short form conclusion in this case.

For context, the coroner’s conclusion will be based on all the evidence that is heard.

There are many short-form conclusions available to the coroner, including natural causes, accident or misadventure among others.

  15. Several unsuccessful attempts to contact witness, inquest hearspublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 24 July

We are now hearing about another witness, Steven Roccas, who has been referred to as "Rocky".

He had previously been in contact regarding the inquest and a list of questions were sent to him. He later denied all knowledge of knowing Jay Slater and of having these conversations previously.

There have since been numerous attempts to contact Roccas. He has been called, emailed, and a letter was left for him at Stratford police station.

Summons papers were arranged for him, but these were unsuccessful. He has not provided a statement to the Spanish authorities.

The coroner says his evidence would be limited as he was in the car with Slater then went to sleep.

The coroner then calls for a short break.

  16. Witness says Slater last seen outside Tenerife bar in statementpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 24 July

The inquest is still hearing a statement from Jay Slater's friend, Brandon Hodgson.

Earlier, the inquest heard there were repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact Hodgson - who is believed to be in Tenerife.

In a statement Hodgson goes over the timeline of the night. Hodgson says the last time he saw Slater was outside Tramps bar in Tenerife.

He adds he heard something about a watch and the chatter around around it.

  17. Attempts to contact Slater's friend have been unsuccessful, inquest toldpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 24 July

The inquest is now hearing of the number of unsuccessful attempts that have been made to contact Brandon Hodgson, another of Slater's friends, so he could give evidence at the inquest.

Among these have been calls, emails, and a summons sent to his home address. Hodgson's mother has also been contacted.

The inquest hears that, so far as is known, it is believed Hodgson is currently in Tenerife.

The inquest turns to a statement given by Hodgson via a phone interview.

It touches on communications between the Slater and Hodgson on the day Slater disappeared.

Among them was a video call in which Slater told him he was in the "middle of nowhere". The call lasted seven or eight minutes, according to the evidence.

Hodgson also said he called Lucy Law telling her to call Slater.

  18. Witness knew nothing about 'stolen' watch, inquest toldpublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 24 July

Lois Norris, representing Slater's family, is now asking questions.

She is going over Lucy Law's evidence, and brings up the watch that we have heard about today.

It was allegedly stolen and the inquest was shown a Snapchat from Slater to friends saying he would sell it.

Law says she didn't receive a Snapchat about it from Slater and she didn't know anything about it that evening.

She adds that "he never mentioned anything about a watch to me" at any point.

Norris asks what Law heard about the watch after Slater went missing.

She says she "heard a lot of things from a lot of people", including it being stolen and it was fake.

There were a lot of theories going around Tenerife, she explains, but she didn't know what was true and what wasn't.

  19. Witness recalls last phone call with Slaterpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 24 July

We are now hearing Lucy Law recount a phone call she received from a friend on the morning of 17 June 2024.

She says she was told Slater was in the mountains and did not have much phone battery left.

She says she thought it was a joke until her friend said it was more serious.

"I thought they were having me on," she explains.

Law then describes a subsequent phone call with Slater - the last known outgoing communication from Slater's phone - in which she asked him where he was and what he was doing.

"He was like 'I'm in the middle of the mountains.'"

She says Slater told her there was "literally nothing" around.

She adds she was panicking as he was on low battery and asked him to go back to where he came from.

  20. Slater left group on night out and never came back, witness sayspublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 24 July

Law, who travelled with Slater to Tenerife, is asked to recount some of the details of the group's night out.

She says Slater left the group at one point in the early hours to go to the toilet but never came back.

She says the group then left the club they were in to look for him but couldn't find him for an hour or so. Law says she and the others then went to get food.

Law says she told Slater she wanted to go home but that he wanted to stay out.

Eventually she decided to leave with another friend, Brandon, and says she didn’t see Slater again.

Asked if Slater seemed upset or not himself during that conversation, Law says he seemed fine and was just enjoying his night.
