Summary

  1. Friend says Slater was 'visibly intoxicated' before attending festivalpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 24 July

The next witness, Lucy Law, has just been sworn in. Lucy travelled to Tenerife with Jay Slater and attended the festival with him as part of a group.

She tells the inquest she had known him for around six or seven years.

As with the other witnesses, the coroner takes her through some of the events both in the days leading up to Slater's disappearance, and then more specifically the night before - Sunday 16 June 2024.

Law describes watching a football game in the evening, with Slater joining the group for around 20 minutes.

The group then split up and reconvened later for the last night of the festival.

Asked about Slater's behaviour at this point, Law says he was "visibly intoxicated" but adds he was "not in a state".

  2. Witness laughs briefly as he gives evidencepublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 24 July

    Fiona Trott
    Reporting from the inquest

Ayub Qassim appears very relaxed when giving evidence and laughs about his nickname Johnny Vegas.

He apologises to the court for swearing.

He’s finished giving evidence and tells the coroner “take care and all the best”.

  3. Slater insisted on getting bus despite Qassim's warnings, inquest hearspublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 24 July

Ayub Qassim says as he was moving his vehicle, he saw Slater talking to Ofelia Hernandez, the Airbnb owner.

When Qassim exited the car, Slater came towards him and said he was leaving and going to "catch a bus" to go back to his apartment, Qassim says.

Qassim told Slater there were no buses, he explains to the inquest. Slater said that Hernandez told him a bus would be there soon, but Qassim continued to warn him against it.

Qassim told Slater to wait and he would drive him back later, but Slater said his friends are waiting for him.

Qassim went back to sleep, presuming Slater was waiting at the bus stop.

The coroner asks if there was any altercation between them. "No," Qassim says.

Lois Norris, the family's lawyer, takes over, and her questions for Qassim are focussing on a phone call Slater made earlier in the night at 04:45 local time.

She asks if it was Qassim he rang.

He say's he cannot remember, but he is "leaning" towards it being him that Slater called.

  4. Qassim says Slater was 'coherent' when he left Airbnbpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 24 July

The coroner now asks Qassim to "go back" and asks about the drugs Slater might have taken that night.

After a back and forth, Qassim sticks by what he said in his statement, in which he said Slater told him he had taken pills, ketamine and cocaine.

He added when Slater left the Airbnb to catch a bus back to Los Cristianos, he was "upright" and "coherent".

  5. Witness asked to recall details of the night Slater went missingpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 24 July

The inquest is back and is still hearing from Qassim, who had rented out the Airbnb in Masca where Jay Slater is known to have visited in the early hours before he went missing.

Qassim picks up where he left off before the break, saying that after a long night he went to bed and left Slater downstairs at the Airbnb, where he could hear him moving around while he was trying to get to sleep upstairs.

He says he was woken not long after going to bed by a couple pressing the buzzer because they wanted Qassim to move his car, and that he saw Slater downstairs at the time.

The inquest into the death of 19-year-old Jay Slater, who went missing in Tenerife last summer before his body was found four weeks later, resumed this morning.

Here's a look at what the inquest has heard so far:

  8. Witness quizzed on events after Slater arrived at Airbnbpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 24 July

Qassim is now asked about what he, his friend "Rocky" and Slater got up to after they drove back to his Airbnb in Masca.

He says Rocky went straight to sleep, and Slater got a phone charger.

Qassim says he got Slater a blanket in order for him to sleep on the sofa. He adds he also left Slater a towel for the morning and cigarettes.

The coroner then adjourns the court for a break. The hearing will resume at 13:40.

In the meantime, we'll bring you a recap of what the inquest has heard so far, so stick with us.

  9. Inquest shown Snapchat videos of journey to Airbnbpublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 24 July

Qassim is now speaking to the inquest about details of the drive back to their apartment, with Slater sitting in the back seat of the car, and a man, referred to as "Rocky", in the passenger seat.

Asked whether Slater was sending any social media posts during the journey, Qassim says he could "see his camera flashing" and saw him "typing" but adds that he wasn't paying particular attention.

The inquest is then shown a Snapchat video featuring a short clip of a car dashboard with a caption referring to taking a "12k rolly" and being off to "get 10 quid for it".

Qassim underlines he was driving home - with no intention of making any detour to sell a watch.

He repeats what he said earlier that he didn't steal any watch and he didn't think Slater did either - but adds they did see a watch being stolen back on the strip earlier that night.

  10. Slater did not steal watch, witness sayspublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 24 July

The coroner is now establishing how Slater ended up at the Airbnb in Masca, that Qassim was renting.

Qassim says Slater asked "if he could come with us" as Slater must have got the impression they were going to continue partying, and his friends had gone home.

Qassim says he told Slater he could join them, and he offered to drop Slater back to his apartment in the morning.

The coroner then asks about a stolen watch that Slater had referred to in messages to his friends that night.

Qassim says there are a lot of people who sell fake watches and a man had offered one to Slater and Qassim. Qassim says he declined the watch, but he doesn't know for certain if Slater accepted.

"One thing I can say is Jay didn't steal no watch," he says.

He never saw Slater with a watch, he adds.

  11. Renter of Airbnb asked about Slater's condition before disappearancepublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 24 July

Qassim is now being asked about Slater's condition on the night of 16 June, before he went missing.

He says Slater "was on the buzz, head bopping, chill, happy, mingling, sort of thing with everyone that was there".

He is also asked the same question Bradley Geoghan, Slater's friend - was previously asked - whether he would have trusted Slater to drive a car.

Qassim says Slater was "coherent" but says whether he would trust him to drive a car "is a different question".

  12. Renter of Masca Airbnb answers questionspublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 24 July

A new witness, Ayub Qassim, has now been sworn in - he rented out the Airbnb in Masca where Slater's known to have visited in the early hours of 17 June 2024, hours before he went missing.

The coroner asks him a few questions about how he came to meet Slater and for details about the nights out they had during the NRG music festival - a weekend festival that Jay and his friends attended in Tenerife.

Moving onto the night of 16 June, the coroner asks Qassim about the people who were part of the group.

He lists various people, including himself, his friend - who he refers to as "Rocky" - Jay Slater and the witness we just heard from, Bradley Geoghan.

  13. Friend questioned on Snapchat messages about a watchpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 24 July

    Fiona Trott
    Reporting from the inquest

A lot of time has been spent asking Bradley Geoghan about a Snapchat message regarding Jay selling a watch.

It feels like they’re trying to get to the bottom of why Jay Slater may have travelled all the way up to that Airbnb in the first place.

  14. Slater's friend quizzed on details of a watchpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 24 July

Slater's family lawyer, Lois Norris, is continuing to ask Geoghan about the timeline on the night of 16 June, as well as the communications he had with Slater via Snapchat and Facetime.

Norris reflects on the statements given by Geoghan at the time - but there are details he can no longer remember.

Both Norris and the coroner are asking Geoghan for any details of a "watch" - the inquest previously heard evidence about messages Slater sent referring to being with "two kids" who had stolen a "luxury" watch from someone.

Asked whether his evidence was that he was "worried" about the watch - Geoghan says he can't remember now.

Geoghan is also unable to give many details about the reasons Slater gave for going to the Airbnb.

He has now finished giving evidence but has been asked to stay in the premises and advised he remains under oath.

  15. Slater wanted to continue drinking, friend sayspublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 24 July

The coroner now asks Bradley Geoghan why he thinks Slater wanted to stay elsewhere on the night of 16 June 2024.

We already know that Slater was at an Airbnb that night, which was not his own accommodation, in the remote village of Masca.

He was taken there after a night of clubbing.

Geoghan says that Slater wanted to continue drinking somewhere.

He then theorises that, by the time Slater got there, he may have sobered up and decided to leave - not wanting to continue the party.

The coroner now hands over to the lawyer representing Jay Slater's family.

Lois Norris is going over the events of 16 June, establishing where Geoghan, Slater and friends went and when, before he disappeared.

  16. Friend asked about Snapchats he received from Slaterpublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 24 July

The coroner and Bradley Geoghan, Jay Slater's friend, are continuing to discuss the details of the night Slater went missing.

Dr James Adeley asks about Snapchats Slater sent Geoghan in the early hours of 17 June 2024.

Geoghan says he did not get the sense his friend was worried, scared or in any trouble when he received a Snapchat about a watch.

He adds Slater showed him on Facetime that he was going to sleep at a house of two men who had joined their company in the past three days.

Geoghan then says he later received a video call from Slater walking along a road. He says he was "a lot better" but still under the influence.

  17. Slater's parents listen to details of alcohol and drug usepublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 24 July

    Fiona Trott
    Reporting from the inquest

Jay Slater's father, Warren Slater, is sitting with arms folded and looks straight ahead as Bradley Geoghan gives details of alcohol and drugs Jay took.

Mother Debbie Duncan is listening carefully, touching her ear.

  18. Friend says Slater took ecstasy pills hours before he went missingpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 24 July

The coroner is asking Geoghan for details about the night out they had on 16 June into the early hours of 17 June - hours before Slater went missing.

Geoghan says he was drunk and couldn't stand at one point.

The coroner then asks for details about the drugs Slater is known to have had in his system, according to a toxicology report.

Geoghan says Slater took ecstasy pills.

Asked if Slater also took ketamine, Geoghan says Slater did on holiday but he doesn't know about that night.

As a reminder: At a previous hearing in May, the inquest heard from toxicology reports and Slater's own messages that he had been under the influence of drugs and alcohol - with traces of MDMA, cocaine and ketamine in his system when he died.

  19. Laughter in court as coroner reacts to details of Tenerife partypublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 24 July

    Fiona Trott
    Reporting from the inquest

There's laughter in court as the coroner explains he hasn’t been to one of the parties in Tenerife that Geoghan is describing.

The coroner says he'll need a few more details as a result.

  20. Jay Slater's friend gives evidencepublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 24 July

The first person giving evidence today is a friend of Jay Slater, Bradley Geoghan, who was in Tenerife with him.

As a reminder: Jay Slater, 19, went missing in Tenerife last summer and his body was found by a mountain rescue team in a remote part of the island after a four-week search.

After swearing an oath, Geoghan starts by going through the details of when they arrived on the island in the summer of 2024 and who met them there.

He says, after arriving at the apartment, they went straight out, with further details on what they did in the following days. He says the group were "drinking and dancing, all of it".

When the coroner asks what "all of it" means, Geoghan says "drinking, dancing, everything you'd expect from a rave".
