The incident took place on Water Street on Monday, when hundreds of thousands of people were out on the city's streets to celebrate Liverpool FC's Premier League victory.

As the car tried to make its way down a packed street, a BBC reporter saw a group of men "trying to bang on the side of it and throw things at it".

The car was then filmed swerving into a group of people gathered at the side of the road, sending dozens crashing to the concrete.

Water Street, the scene of Monday's chaos, has reopened this morning - and there is very little evidence left behind of what happened here.

Cars are going down the road, though some flowers and cards have been left as a reminder of the incident.

Merseyside Police said yesterday that the period of time they had been given to question the 53-year-old suspect had been extended until lunchtime today.

We know he was arrested shortly after 18:00 on Monday, which means he has been in custody for around 36 hours at this point.

Usually, police have 24 hours to question a suspect in custody before they have to either charge them or let them go.

A senior police officer can authorise that period being extended to 36 hours if the crime being investigated is serious enough, but a court has to give permission for a suspect to be held any longer than that.

People suspected of terrorism offences can be held for up to a fortnight without a charge but police have ruled that out in this case.

  4. What we know about the suspected driverpublished at 06:41 British Summer Time 28 May

Within hours of a car driving into a crowd during Liverpool FC's victory parade on Monday evening, Merseyside Police announced they had detained a man.

They later confirmed that the man had been arrested and was the suspected driver of the car.

Here's what we've learned so far:

    • He is a 53-year-old white British man
    • He is from the West Derby area of Liverpool
    • He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, driving while unfit through drugs and dangerous driving offences
    • Police are not treating the incident as terror-related

Usually when a suspect is arrested, police forces in England and Wales just give out the age of the person and where they were arrested but in this case, the man's nationality and ethnicity were also shared.

  5. Liverpool suspect being questioned by police over parade crashpublished at 06:34 British Summer Time 28 May

Good morning and welcome to our continued live coverage after a car ploughed into football fans during Liverpool's Premier League victory parade on Monday.

Police are still questioning a suspect after 65 people were hurt in the incident.

We are awaiting an update from Merseyside Police about whether the suspected driver - a 53-year-old man from the city's West Derby area - will be charged with any criminal offence.

There are ongoing questions about how the event was managed too - yesterday police said a Ford Galaxy avoided a roadblock by tailgating an ambulance responding to reports of a member of the public having suffered a heart attack.

We'll be hearing from people who were impacted and bringing you the latest updates throughout today.
