  2. Land standing Labour councillor in Wiltshirepublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 2 May

    Dan O'Brien
Political reporter, BBC Wiltshire in Salisbury

As it stands, Labour’s only remaining councillor in Wiltshire is Ricky Rogers - representing Fisherton and Bemerton Village - who has been doing this for three-and-a-half decades.

Wearing a rosette he wore in 2007 at the height of Labour’s popularity, he tells me “there was a lot of resentment of the government” on the doorstep this year but “I’m pleased my personal track record of keeping things local and trying to deal with local problems has just done enough to keep me in a position as a councillor”.

“We’re lacking on delivering a believable message,” he says of Labour nationally. “That’s not a criticism of the government, its got an awful job to try and put the country back on its feet, but we’ve got to take people along with us.”

On Reform UK he tells me: “You can’t not congratulate them, they picked on a theme which connected to the public and that delivered them a sizeable vote in every ward of the city."

Tidworth East & Ludgershall South has just elected a Reform councillor, taking the seat from the Conservatives.

It is one of Wiltshire's many areas with a large military presence, where many thought Reform may perform well.

But worth noting the turnout was only 17%. Of more than 4,000 people in the ward who were eligible to vote, 750 actually did - with 377 picking the winner.

  7. Labour seeking out the 'positives'published at 14:00 British Summer Time 2 May

    Kelly Morgan
    BBC News, Wiltshire in Chippenham

When I asked "how are you all doing?" I got a slow head nod by way of reply, which pretty much sums up the vibe amongst Labour's North Wiltshire candidates.

In their words it's a "tough" election but they are seeking out the positives and feeling optimistic about the town and parish ballots to come.

The first result for north Wiltshire is in. Ashley O'Neil has held his seat in Calne Rural.

Mr O'Neil is 'really pleased' with his victory, while acknowledging it has been a difficult day for the Conservatives. He expects several seats across Wiltshire to fall to Reform.

But, he said it was "too early" to think about working alongside Reform if the Conservatives don't achieve an overall majority.

    Esme Ashcroft
    Political reporter, BBC Gloucestershire

The first result at the Stroud count is in.

Stephen Davies has held the Hardwicke and Severn division.

The previous Gloucestershire County Council leader says it's too early to say how the Conservatives will fare in the county, but has admitted things "aren't going as well" as he'd hoped here in the Stroud district.

Elsewhere, John Patient for the Green group has taken Haresfield and Upton St Leonard.

This is one of the council's new divisions, so this marks the inaugural result.

Speaking to BBC Wiltshire, deputy returning officer Emily Legg explained the scale of today's count in Trowbridge

"We've done a lot of preparation for today, we've thought about every eventuality and have really committed staff.

"There's over 2,000 staff on polling day and at the count there's a few hundred here.

"First of all, we've counted the number of votes cast and make sure it matches the number we're expecting based on the number of votes cast yesterday, before we move to checking them.

"We then look through hundreds of ballot papers, assessing who everyone has voted for and that allows us to declare the vote.

"It will be me on stage, I'm excited to see what the result is that's coming in," she said.

    Dan O'Brien
Political reporter, BBC Wiltshire in Salisbury

The first results have started to come in for Wiltshire - so far, no surprises.

Longstanding senior Conservative councillors Bridget Wayman (Nadder Valley) and Ian Blair-Pilling (Avon Valley) have been re-elected, as has longstanding independent councillor Graham Wright (Durrington).

We can't read too much into these few results so early, but worth noting Reform UK have come second in each one.

    Sophie Parker
    BBC News, Trowbridge in Wiltshire

Generally the press area at a count has a lot of snacks and plug sockets.

I have more than one iPhone with me - plus the microphone, laptop and two bags of kit. Yes - some wires may be slightly tangled with the phone chargers.

I've tried to go for more savoury snacks on this occasion.
