A professional operation by Hertfordshire Policepublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 10 July

    Lucy Manning
    Special correspondent

This was a very professional operation by Hertfordshire Police. They had searched for Kyle Clifford overnight and put out a public appeal this morning.

By this afternoon there was intense police activity at Lavender Hill Cemetery in Enfield with armed police and ambulances.

At 18:20 they were able to confirm the suspect had been captured without any shots being fired by police, although the suspect did have some injuries.

The police statement also made the point that the Hunt family felt great upset that their relatives were named by the media before they had been formally identified.

It must be the most difficult time for the family with the media, including the BBC, reporting in real time.

It can’t be easy to deal with when they are having to cope with such a personal tragedy.

He is receiving medical treatment having been found with injuries. No shots were fired by police, the Hertfordshire force said.

At this stage, it is believed the suspect was known to the victims.

Det Insp Justine Jenkins, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: "This continues to be an incredibly difficult time for the victims’ family and we would ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with what has happened.

She says the investigation "is moving at pace" and police have yet to formally identify the victims.

“Following extensive inquiries, the suspect has been located and nobody else is being sought in connection with the investigation at this time," she adds.

I'm on the scene at Lavender Hill Cemetery.

The lane behind me, Cooks Hole Road, runs alongside the cemetery and Hilly Fields park, which also one of the areas that the search has been focused on.

The air is thick with the sound of helicopters, including the BBC one that has shot the attached footage.

There have been a large number of emergency vehicles going up and down this road just to the right of me - there are a couple of fire engines as well. We have been prevented from going any further down that road there.

This is in the north Enfield area - and I've spoken to many people who live around here who say this has been a really stressful time for them because they've just been dealing with that uncertainty [...] knowing that the police have not been able to catch the suspect yet.

One of the cards reads: "I wish none of this happened as real. I wish I could hug you all, tell you how much you meant to me..."

Jacqueline Ball, who lives near Rendlesham Road in Enfield, said the schools in the area were put into "lockdown" to keep the children safely indoors.

Some parents say they were given specific, staggered times to pick up their children.

She says it’s a close-knit neighbourhood, and the community has found it scary and “stressful” knowing police still haven’t caught the suspect.

One school has described it as a "lighter lockdown".

  17. Crossbows used in 10 killings across decadepublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 10 July

Earlier we reported the home secretary is looking at tightening up the laws on crossbows and it had already been on the previous government's radar.

According to the Home Office, there were fewer than 10 killings involving the ancient bolt-firing devices between 2011 and 2021, but the department said it was "clear that when used as a weapon, crossbows do pose a risk".

Former safeguarding minister Laura Farris said crossbows were "used rarely in violent crime in this country but they can be highly dangerous".

In January last year, a domestic homicide review found the Metropolitan Police missed opportunities to protect Sana Muhammad from her ex-husband in the years before he killed her with a crossbow in east London.

The 35-year-old was eight months pregnant when former nurse Ramanodge Unmathallegadoo, then 51, burst into her home in Ilford and fired an arrow into her stomach in 2018.

Her unborn son - who was delivered by Caesarean section - miraculously survived.

Unmathallegadoo was found guilty of murder and handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 33 years in 2019.

Former Conservative Home Secretary Priti Patel ordered the review of crossbow rules after would-be assassin Jaswant Singh Chail was encouraged by an AI chatbot to break into Windsor Castle on Christmas Day 2021 with a loaded crossbow to kill the late Queen.

He was jailed for nine years for treason in 2023.

I'm at the scene in Bushey and in the past hour we've seen some flowers laid at the start of Ashlyn Close.

One woman was in tears and clearly very upset at the news of the murders.

There are a lot of media reporters here and understandably she didn't want to talk to us.

During the afternoon we've seen police knocking on doors asking if anyone saw or heard anything yesterday evening.

One of the local councillors told me this is a very quiet residential area and the murders will have a huge impact on the locals - not just in the days to come, but long into the future.

A neighbour on Rendlesham Road in Enfield in north London has described the moment armed police surrounded a property which she said was owned by a member of Kyle Clifford’s family.

"It was around 10 in the morning and I had just done the school run and I looked out of my window and saw around six armed police officers and a police dog," said the woman.

She went on to say how a woman was led out of the property. However, she was not handcuffed and was chatting to police officers.
