Since 1995, Dame Anna Wintour has been at the helm of the Met Gala as its co-chair.

This year's theme is the first to focus on menswear in 22 years, and in particular, fashion pioneered by black men. Besides Dame Anna, all five co-chairs are highly successful black men drawn from sports, music, fashion, and film.

"I have been very inspired by seeing how much it means to the black community", Wintour told actress La La Anthony on the red carpet.

"It is putting a spotlight on amazing black talent... At this moment in our political history, I think it is important to stand next to the black community."

Though Wintour referred to political events in the US, this year's theme was chosen well in advance of President Donald Trump's 2024 re-election.

His administration has led efforts to remove diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from the federal government and extended the policy to also include some private institutions.

Proponents of DEI policies say they address historic or ongoing underrepresentation and discrimination against certain groups including racial minorities, but critics say such programmes can themselves be discriminatory by specifically calling attention to race.

Dame Anna also touched on some lighter topics - including how she plans to decompress after the big night. Foot massages, she responded.

And, of course, there was Zendaya, with the brim of her white hat perched fashionably low over her brow.

Florals? For spring? In the hands of some of tonight's most daring guests, they can, in fact, be ground-breaking.

Actress Sydney Sweeney stands on the blue carpet of this year's Met Gala, which is adorned with daffodils.

The Met Gala has become known for its inventive "red" carpets, which often riff on the theme of the night.

This year, the carpet is navy blue adorned with daffodils, a motif that broadly symbolises hope and resilience.

The carpet is the brainchild of artist Cy Gavin, who was inspired by the daffodil’s scientific name, Narcissus, from the Greek myth in which the protagonist falls in love with his reflection.

“I became interested in that moment of self-recognition and appreciation,” Gavin told Vogue. “It’s very easy to not see yourself clearly because of all the selves that other people tell us we are — and I was struck by the poignancy of that being also a sort of punishment."

Actress and singer Teyana Taylor, who is hosting Vogue’s live-streaming of the red carpet, arrives in custom Marc Jacobs on the arm of costume designer Ruth E. Carter.

Carter has worked with the likes of Spike Lee and on the Marvel Black Panther franchise to create some of our modern pop cultural cues for the black dandy.

Taylor represents this beautifully, pairing a durag with a burgundy cape embroidered with “Harlem Rose,” a nod to her 2018 song.
