  3. Patients urged to 'bear with' GPs during disruptionpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 19 July

    In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: "Please bear with your local GPs."

    PA News Agency reports that around 3,700 practices may be affected by the issue, and people trying to access the NHS app have also encountered problems.

    Mr Streeting added that his department is working closely with colleagues across government.

    A spokesperson for NHS England said: “The NHS has long-standing measures in place to manage the disruption, including using paper patient records and handwritten prescriptions, and the usual phone systems to contact your GP."

    There is currently no known impact to 999 or emergency services.

    Patients should continue to attend appointments unless told otherwise, but should only contact a GP if it is urgent. Otherwise, patients should use the 111 service.

    Wiltshire Council has said that the ongoing Microsoft outage has affected leisure centres in the county.

    Ashley O'Neill, Cabinet Member for IT said: "Our leisure centres have been experiencing issues with their card payment machines but these are now starting to come back online.

    "We hope this will be fully resolved as quickly as possible and we thank people for bearing with us in the meantime."

  5. When will the issue be fixed?published at 14:47 British Summer Time 19 July

    Cyber security experts warn that it could take days for big organisations to get back to normal, following the outage this morning.

    It was caused when an update from cyber security company CrowdStrike caused Microsoft systems to "blue screen" and crash.

    CrowdStrike is one of the biggest and most trusted brands in cyber security, with about 24,000 customers worldwide.

    Although there is now a software fix for the issue, the manual process required will take a huge amount of work for computers to get back up and running, they said.

    Somerset Council confirmed earlier that the global IT outage had affected its ability to make bank-to-bank transfer payments.

    Council leaders have now clarified that the issue is with the provider of one system, and that most payments, including benefits payments, are not affected.

    Bristol Airport's departures and arrivals page, external show there are some delays this afternoon.

    Arrivals from Malaga, Pisa, Alicante, Amsterdam, and Catania appear to be delayed.

    As do flights heading to Paris ORY, Alicante, Dalaman, Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris CDG, Krakow, Venice Municipal, and Porto.

    Bristol Airport said it has "not faced significant disruption" so far.

    A spokesperson said: "There is no impact to passport control at eGates currently. Most restaurants and retailers are now accepting card payments, but we recommend bringing some cash."

    If you're wondering why so many GP practices across the country have been having problems, here's why.

    NHS England said there was an issue with the EMIS Web system, which is understood to be used by about 60% of practices in England.

    PA has been reporting some 3,700 surgeries may be affected.

    A spokeswoman for NHS England said: “The NHS is aware of a global IT outage and an issue with EMIS, an appointment and patient record system, which is causing disruption in the majority of GP practices."

    NHS Somerset urged patients who have not been contacted to attend their booked appointments as usual.

    People have been urged to be "patient" after a number of NHS services across Gloucestershire have been affected by the global IT outage.

    A spokesperson for NHS Gloucestershire said: "IT systems at a small number of GP surgeries are currently impacted and we kindly ask that people only call their surgery if they have an urgent medical need until the issue is resolved.

    "Some community pharmacies are also experiencing IT issues so please be patient and understanding."

    An NHS Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board spokesperson confirmed there is currently "no known impact on 999 or emergency services".

    “The NHS has long standing measures in place to manage the disruption, including using paper patient records and handwritten prescriptions, and the usual phone systems to contact your GP," a spokesperson said.

    “Patients should attend appointments unless told otherwise and only contact your GP if it’s urgent.

    Nick Laurence, supervisor at Badham Pharmacy in Swindon Road, Cheltenham, told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "It's been an absolute nightmare.

    "We can’t download any prescriptions and we can’t see what’s going on the doctor’s side of it. There’s been a lot of miscommunication.

    “We cannot take card payment at all.

    “If it carries into the weekend, it’s going to be awful.”

    Dozens of patients have been turned away from Somerset surgeries.

    Speaking outside Blackbrook Surgery in Taunton, Adrian Busuttil said he was unable to access the pharmacy, too. He was advised to book an appointment next week.

    Another patient Andrew Hipkiss said: “My appointment has been cancelled, there’s nothing these guys can do unfortunately. It is what it is.”

    Dr Tim Norbury, GP at Taunton Vale Healthcare Surgery in Somerset, said: "Unfortunately while it’s down, not only can we not book appointments but we can’t see any health information or know what tests people are coming for.

    "All routine work has had to stop. We can still work with new urgent or emergency problems but even then you’re much more limited because without knowing your past medical history, you’re running the risk of not being able to diagnose these things properly.”

    He urged patients to not contact GP surgeries today, but he said if it is important “please don’t sit at home on it”.

    He said: “If you’re trying to order a prescription or a routine test, or routine appointment, then please give the surgeries some time for this system to recover and contact them next week.”

    Bristol Airport said some of its retailers are unable to accept card payments and advised passengers to check with their airlines before travelling.

    On X it posted: “A global IT issue is impacting travel. We advise passengers to contact their airlines for the latest flight information before travelling to the Airport.

    “Some of our retailers are currently unable to accept cards – we recommend passengers bring cash if possible.”
