Watch: Moment Oasis take to the stage for first gig in 16 years

  1. I'm now covered in beerpublished at 21:31 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

A man has just accidentally poured beer all down my backside and legs.

But it’s understandable because Slide Away has long been a fans favourite album track. Friends and lovers are embracing for this one.

    “Let me be the one...”

I've decided to forgive the guy behind me. Peace and love, baby.

  2. Liam acknowledges ticket pricing fiascopublished at 21:28 British Summer Time 4 July

“Are you having a good time?” asks Liam.

“Was it worth the £40,000 you paid for the ticket,” he jokes, referencing the ticket debacle.

Some wearisome laughs of acknowledgement but people don’t generally seem to mind. He gives them value for money though with next track Cast No Shadow, backed again by Noel’s falsetto which is impressively still in tact after all these years.

  3. Stand By Me goes down well with crowdpublished at 21:25 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

OK we’re staying in 1997 for a rousing rendition of Stand By Me.

Younger fans might know it as the song from the recent Halifax advert (other banks are available).

Older ones know it from the band’s more elaborate and somewhat divisive third album.

    Went down well tonight.

  4. Hundreds of ticketless fans gather outside the stadiumpublished at 21:20 British Summer Time 4 July

    Lucy Vladev
    Reporting from Cardiff

Hundreds of people have gathered outside the stadium to hear the band, even without a ticket.

Many told me they either couldn’t get a ticket or couldn’t afford one but wanted to be part of the atmosphere anyway. People brought along deck chairs and drinks to sit outside and hear the music, some even arriving by boat on the river to sing along.

Inside the Principality, 62,000 fans are watching tonight and tomorrow before the tour moves to Manchester.

  5. Liam's chaos and Noel's calmness a 'key part' of any Oasis showpublished at 21:14 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

I’d have to disagree with Mark there.

The blend of Liam’s chaos and Noel’s relative calm has always been a key part of any Oasis show.

Anyway, let’s not fall out, as Liam is back on stage to sing the first song taken from the 1997 album Be Here Now - D'You Know What I Mean?

  6. Energy dips on stage, but not in the crowdpublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 4 July

Noel’s acoustic set doesn’t quite match the energy of the thrilling first 45 minutes.

It’s a sign of how special, or unfathomable, the Oasis chemistry is.

But even so, the singalongs to "Half The World Away" and "Little By Little" threaten to drown out the band.

  7. Phone lights on for Half the World Awaypublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

Noel is now playing Half the World Away - the theme tune to Royle Family and everyone around the stadium has whacked their phone lights on.

He lets the crowd sing the final chorus themselves - a tale of the melancholy of being young and bored in a northern town.

    Next up Little by Little...

  8. Liam takes a rest as Noel takes centre stagepublished at 21:07 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

Liam's gone off for a rest, so it’s time for Noel to pick up his acoustic and take centre stage, starting with Talk Tonight.

This is Oasis all over, Liam’s rock ‘n’ roll raspers and Noel’s big ballads.

  9. Roll With It up now with no on-stage bickering so farpublished at 21:06 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

Liam has not bickered with Noel once yet and they’re now duetting on Roll With It.

They lost the battle of Britpop to Blur with this track, but they may have won the war by the end of this tour.

  10. Crowd embrace the songs: 'Amazing' one man tells uspublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

There’s a man in front of me with a perfect Oasis haircut.

I asked him what he thinks so far and I can’t repeat what he said, other than the last word - "amazing".

He then starts singing along to the next track, "Fade Away" - basically Oasis’s sped up version of the Beatles’ "Help!" - so I lost him.

But I think you get the picture.

  11. The whole stadium joins in as Oasis launches into 'Cigarettes and Alcohol'published at 20:59 British Summer Time 4 July

A bestubbled Noel joined Liam again for joint vocals on the outro of the band’s first ever number one - "Some Might Say".

More grey hairs than when it was released in the mid 90s but sounding just as fresh.

Liam then makes the whole crowd turn around with their arms around each other and do the poznan - a pogo style dance association with Man City.

Worst part of the night for a United fan.

All is forgiven as it tees up "Cigarettes and Alcohol" - the track they've played the most live ever.

The whole stadium joins in for the "sunshiiiiiiiiiiiine" line.

  12. Liam flirts with the crowd: 'You're looking good'published at 20:56 British Summer Time 4 July

“How are we getting on then, alright?” asks Liam.

“You’re looking good,” he adds, pointing into the front few rows. “Especially you, there. Stunning.”

  13. Gallagher brothers hand-in-hand on stagepublished at 20:54 British Summer Time 4 July

We're now getting a flurry of images from inside the Principality Stadium, in Cardiff.

Sixteen years on from their last performance following years of trading insults online, the brothers are back on stage.

Not only are they sharing a stage, but they are walking hand-in-hand.

  14. 'We're the outside crew... it's good vibes'published at 20:48 British Summer Time 4 July

    BBC News

Fans say despite not being able to get tickets, they just had to come by the stadium to soak up the atmosphere.

"We're the outside crew, we're proud of it," one fan says, adding they were disappointed the roof was closed.

"Everyone's stationed out here, there are so many people here, it's good vibes," she added.

While another fan, who has tickets for the gig tomorrow, says tonight is her Christmas Eve.

"We thought they will iron out all the kinks, hopefully they won't fall out... and tomorrow is Christmas Day. We're waiting for it."

  15. Hands in the air as Oasis play comeback gigpublished at 20:43 British Summer Time 4 July

The crowd is rocking in Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

People can be seen holding their hands in the air - some sitting on others' shoulders - as Oasis play on the stage in front of them.

  17. Oasis have rediscovered their sparkpublished at 20:32 British Summer Time 4 July

    Mark Savage
Music correspondent, reporting from the gig

On Oasis’s last tour, the band were accused of going through the motions. The vocals were poor, the music was lacklustre, the passion was gone.

On the evidence of the first 15 minutes, they’ve rediscovered their spark. The band sound energised - rejuvenated, even.

Liam has that leonine look in his eyes, prowling up to the microphone and baring his teeth as he tears into Some Might Say. This is what fans were hoping for.

  18. 'It's been too long', Liam tells screaming crowdpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

    "Yes beautiful people!" cries Liam.

    "It’s been too long."

    People are bouncing and screaming.

So much screaming as Noel’s distorted guitar riff leads them into next track, "Morning Glory".

  19. This is biblicalpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 4 July

    Paul Glynn
    Reporting from the gig

This is the first time the Gallaghers have dueted on a song in nearly 16 years.

Biblical stuff, as Liam might say on social media later.

  20. Hello... We need each otherpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 4 July

    Mark Savage
Music correspondent, reporting from the gig

Liam hangs a tambourine from his teeth as they cut short Hello and race into the opening chords of Acquiesce.

Acquiesce is the perfect song at this point. A track where both brothers sing together, with it’s hatchet-burying chorus: “We need each other / We believe in one another.”
