  3. Leicester South: Gaza a key issue in citypublished at 04:26 British Summer Time 5 July

The Israel-Gaza conflict was a big talking point in the build-up to the general election, and it seems to have been one of the key factors in the shock result in Leicester South.

Pro-Palestinian candidate Shockat Adam Patel beat senior Labour member Jonathan Ashworth by fewer than 1,000 votes in the constituency.

More than 33,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed in air and artillery strikes carried out by the Israeli military in response to an attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023, Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says.

Labour's position had been criticised during the election and a number of independent candidates stood against the party exclusively on the issue.

I'm at Loughborough Leisure Centre, which is hosting two counts for the Loughborough and Mid Leicestershire constituencies.

The votes are expected to be verified in the next few minutes, after which counting will begin.

It's estimated results for both constituencies will be declared at about 5am.

Mid Leicestershire is a new constituency, which includes parts of the former Charnwood constituency, the previous incumbent MP Edward Argar held a 23,000 majority.

Loughborough retains a similar area, the previous incumbent MP being Jane Hunt for the Conservatives, with a 7,000-plus majority.

Labour are confident of taking Loughborough, known as a bellwether seat, and are hopeful of taking Mid Leicestershire.

    Breaking

Conservative MP, Neil O'Brien, has retained his place in Parliament, collecting 18,614 votes.

  6. Labour gain North West Leicestershirepublished at 04:02 British Summer Time 5 July
    Breaking

Amanda Hack, of Labour, has won North West Leicestershire, which is a gain from the Tories.

Andrew Bridgen won for the Conservatives with a majority of 20,400 in 2019, but was expelled by the party for comparing the side effects of Covid vaccines to the Holocaust.

He became the Reclaim Party's sole MP before quitting seven months later, and stood on this ballot as an independent, finishing second last.

Mr Costa won with 18,264 votes, beating Labour's Robert Parkinson, who won 12,758 votes. Bill Piper came in third for Reform.

That doesn't quite tell the whole story though - as Mr Costa's vote share is down by nearly 31% from 2019.

    Dale Neal

Here in Melton, counting has been taking a little longer than expected with a couple of tables already needing a recount.

The Reform team are still in a buoyant mood. The Tory candidate, Ed Argar, is pacing in between taking calls from Conservative HQ. The Labour candidate, Zafran Khan, has returned too.

The declaration is expected just after 4am.

Shockat Adam Patel won Leicester South by less than 1,000 votes, beating Jonathan Ashworth, the former shadow secretary of state for work and pensions.

To loud cheers from the onlooking crowd, Mr Patel got 14,739 votes to Mr Ashworth's 13,760.

Mr Ashworth had held the seat since 2011, and had a big majority of 22,675 from 2019.

As expected, Dr Luke Evans retained his seat as MP for Hinckley and Bosworth, but that doesn't tell the full story.

His majority of more than 24,000 has been reduced to less than 6,000, while his total votes have almost halved since 2019.

But he told me that he feels "relieved and honoured" to be re-elected and pledged to work for the people of Hinckley and Bosworth.
