Summary

  1. A changing picture in Hinckley and Bosworthpublished at 02:08 British Summer Time 5 July

    Alex Smith
    BBC News Online

Hinckley and Bosworth was previously just Bosworth in the last general election in 2019, but is one of a number of seats to change following tweaks by the Boundary Commission of England.

The Bosworth seat was only ever held by two Conservative MPs since 2010 – David Tredinnick and Dr Luke Evans.

Per Jack's update, it's looking likely the latter will retain his seat.

  2. Lib Dems 'have an air of positivity'published at 01:57 British Summer Time 5 July

    Jack Rafferty
    BBC Radio Leicester

While it looks like the Conservatives will hold Hinckley and Bosworth, as expected, the Liberal Democrats inside the room have an air of positivity about their chances of greatly reducing the majority, which was over 26,000 in 2019.

One campaigner said these historically-safe Tory seats could even be considered marginal moving forward. Meanwhile, it appears it could be very close between Labour and Reform for who will come third here.

  4. Keith Vaz arrives for Leicester East countpublished at 01:50 British Summer Time 5 July

    Will Jefford
    BBC East Midlands

One Leicester candidate Keith Vaz, who was Labour's Leicester East MP for 32 years, has arrived at the Mattioli Arena.

He previously stepped down from his position in 2019 after he was found to have "expressed willingness" to purchase cocaine for male prostitutes.

His candidacy has thrown a spanner in the works for Labour candidate Rajesh Agrawal, who will also have to compete against another former MP for the area, Claudia Webbe.

Ms Webbe was the MP for Labour after her election in 2019, but was suspended by the party following a conviction for harassment.

Since 1987, the seat has only been represented by Mr Vaz and, latterly, Ms Webbe. Will that change tonight?

South Leicestershire's former MP and Conservative candidate Alberto Costa said his party had fought their toughest election campaign.

Speaking shortly after the exit poll was released, which forecasts a landslide victory for Labour, he said: "Clearly the people have expressed across the United Kingdom, a want - a need for change.

"The truth is this has been the most challenging general election for the Conservative and Unionist Party that can be remembered here in South Leicestershire."

Since 2010, the seat has been held by Mr Costa and Andrew Robathan, both Conservatives.

An interesting update from the Harborough, Oadby and Wigston count...

We're over halfway through the verification of votes for Rutland and Stamford.

A reminder that Rutland and Stamford is the result of the "divorce" of the former Rutland and Melton seat.

  13. No room for Winston Churchill in Leicester Westpublished at 00:41 British Summer Time 5 July

Looking at Leicester West, the constituency has previously rejected two prominent politicians, who later went on to become prime minister.

Ramsay MacDonald, one of the founders of the Labour Party, contested this seat for Labour in 1918, but was defeated by the National Democratic Party, a short-lived anti-socialist pro-Empire group. He later became the country's first Labour prime minister in 1924 - and again in 1929.

A certain Winston Churchill (pictured) also tried his luck here in 1923. He stood as a Liberal and lost to Labour. This was the middle of a three-year period, between 1900 and 1964, when he wasn't an MP.

A trio of constituencies are being fought in Leicester tonight, with the Mattioli Arena hosting all three counts.

Leicester East could be one of the more interesting contests in the county, with 10 different candidates vying for the seat.

Former Labour MPs Keith Vaz and Claudia Webbe are standing in the seat, which could be a candidate for a recount come the early hours of the morning.

Leicester South and Leicester West will also be hotly-contested seats, with seven and nine candidates standing respectively.
