  1. Kristi Noem says Guantanamo Bay migrant detention is legalpublished at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is speaking on CNN this morning about the Trump administration's efforts to crack down on illegal immigration, including using the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp to house migrants who they say have criminal ties.

Pressed on whether it's legal to bring migrants on US soil to the Cuban detention camp, Noem defends the Trump administration's move. The US has leased the land from Cuba for years, previously holding terrorism suspects there.

"We are standing up the operations, believing we have all legal right and authority to do so," Noem says on CNN.

Noem says the plans are only to hold migrants there temporarily, saying they are sending people back to their home countries from there.

As Trump has ramped up efforts to deport migrants, reports have emerged that detention centres are at capacity. But Noem denies this, saying they are "continuously busing people back to Mexico" and flying them back to other home countries to make room.

"We're going after those that have been the violent criminals perpetuating crime in our community," she says.

  2. A round of golf with Tiger Woods to start the daypublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

It's just after 09:20 (14:20 GMT) in Florida, where US President Donald Trump is reportedly playing a round of golf with Tiger Woods.

CBS News, the BBC's US partner, says Trump is on the course with Woods at the president's club in West Palm.

Trump is also on Truth Social while golfing, that's his social media platform. He's posted about his interview later today on Fox News, and also about South Africa.

He says without citing evidence that "certain classes of people" were being treated "very badly" in South Africa. It comes after he signed an executive order freezing financial aid to the nation.

On Saturday, the South African government condemned Trump's order as "a campaign of misinformation and propaganda aimed at misrepresenting our great nation".

  3. What happened yesterday?published at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Yesterday, as researchers and government staff reacted to news of grant cuts at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and turmoil at USAID, Trump spent his Saturday golfing at his West Palm Beach, Florida, club, the BBC's US partner CBS News reports.

His close ally Elon Musk, leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), was busy defending his team's attempted takeover of Treasury Department payment and data systems.

A federal judge blocked Musk and his team from accessing the secure systems, leading to an agreement between the Tesla billionaire and treasury.

Government treasury payments now require a "categorization code" and a "rationale", according to CBS News.

In other news, after Trump's administration ordered all overseas USAID employees to return home, a judge paused those efforts for a week.
