The president-elect attending a morning service at St John’s Episcopal Church is an inauguration day tradition. Having some of the wealthiest – and most powerful – corporate leaders sitting a few pews behind the incoming president is something new, however.

Apple’s Tim Cook, multi-billionaire Elon Musk, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Google/Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai were all expected to attend the Capitol swearing-in ceremony later this morning. But they also showed up at the much more intimate religious gathering, smiling and chatting amongst themselves.

Popular podcaster Joe Rogan, whose endorsement helped boost Trump in the final days of the campaign, was also in the church.

Donald Trump’s increasingly close relationship with tech leaders has been noted for weeks now. They’ve donated millions to his inauguration fund, taken trips to the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago resort and, in the case of Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, altered Facebook’s moderation policies to accommodate conservative concerns.

Although Trump campaigned against the privileged elite, today he’s rubbing elbows with men at the very pinnacle of US corporate power.

  7. 'We're all freezing' - Trump supporters queue to watch ceremonypublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

It's currently -3C (26.6F) in Washington DC right now, a freezing temperature that forced the inauguration ceremony indoors last minute.

But it hasn't put off thousands of spectators who are in the nation's capital for today's event.

Queues formed from the early hours, and there's plenty out there braving the low temperature for a glimpse of the historic occasion - beanies and jackets in tow.

It seems pretty clear now that Donald Trump will want to sign some of these executive orders and actions in front of his 20,000 supporters at the Capital One Arena, just a mile away from the White House.

The stage has been set up with the traditional podium on one side from which he'll do his speech.

But interestingly, the other side of the stage has a desk, a fancy chair, a microphone and a circular plate, perhaps to accommodate a presidential seal.

The service at St John's Church has now concluded after roughly 25 minutes, closing out with a rendition of "America the Beautiful".

  10. Trump to declare southern border emergency and take 10 executive actions todaypublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Reporting from the White House

The incoming Trump administration will declare a “national emergency” at the US-Mexico border and direct the defence department to “seal the border” as part of a raft of executive actions aimed at restoring “common sense immigration policy”, according to incoming White House administration officials.

In a brief call with reporters, an incoming official said that 10 executive actions will be signed by Donald Trump today, all pertaining to the US-Mexico border.

The officials said that as part of the orders, the Pentagon will deploy additional resources and personnel to the border, including counter-drone capabilities.

Additionally, Trump will order that officials restart construction of the border wall, about 450 miles (724km) of which were built during his first administration, and reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy that requires migrants wait for their asylum proceedings on the Mexican side of the border.

One key question when it comes to the fashion on inauguration day is by who, and where, were the clothes made – as it is often seen as a chance to champion American creativity and manufacturing.

For her church service look, Melania Trump opted for a coat by New York designer Adam Lippes, and a hat made by another American designer, Eric Javits.

First inauguration around, Melania faced a challenge, as many American designers either openly or more discreetly refused to dress her.

Ralph Lauren, a long-time Democrat with a sense of duty to the office of the president, if not values that are aligned with the Trumps, provided the blue suit that she would wear on the day.

It wasn’t a decision to be taken lightly – people used the #boycottralphlauren hashtag in response. He had previously dressed Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan.

We've also spotted media tycoon, Rupert Murdoch and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Trump to strike optimistic note during inauguration addresspublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Sarah Smith
North America editor, reporting from Washington DC

Donald Trump seems to be in a sunny and optimistic mood as he is about to become America's 47th president.

According to some short extracts from his inauguration speech, that have been released in advance by his team, he will say that “a tide of change is sweeping the country” and that he returns to the presidency “confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success”.

Eight years ago, at his first inauguration, he painted a dark picture of what he called “American carnage’. But after his second election victory he appears to be feeling more upbeat.

He and his team are definitely more confident that he will be able to enact his bold agenda. And, after his decisive election victory, the nation seems much more willing to accept him as their head of state.

At a raucous rally last night he told his supporters that he would “fix every single crisis facing this country”. And that we are standing “on the verge of the greatest four years in American history”.

These are big promises that it will be difficult to deliver. But they give us an insight into the mood and mindset of the man about to enter the White House

Meanwhile, out on the streets of DC, I'm catching up with Don Morris, who has travelled from West Virginia with his son, Jesse Jennings.

He says that it's typically a three-hour drive, but that stretched to seven with a weekend snow storm.

It’s now a family tradition - both Don and Jesse were here eight years ago for Donald Trump’s first inauguration.

But they didn’t want to miss it.

“We think he’s fantastic,” Jennings says.

And Don, bundled in a full body snow suit, has a simple message for those who supported Vice-President Kamala Harris: “Sorry for your luck.”

Trump supporters are already starting to take their seats inside the Capital One Arena - a full eight hours before Donald Trump is due to speak here after his formal swearing in at the Capitol, about a mile southeast of here.

The few hundred taking their seats are all wrapped up warm against the frigid Washington temperatures that have swept across the region in the last couple of days, and wearing their red Maga hats.

At the concession stands, two coffees came to $13 (£10.57) and a Diet Coke and a water came to $17 (£14) - it's going to be an expensive day out for the 20,000 who'll make it inside.

The music playlists - so familiar to us who have followed Trump around the country for months - are already being piped through the speakers - Diana Ross is the current tune entertaining us.

It's the Trump family's second time heading to the White House. But this time round, they look a little different.

The once-small Barron Trump, his youngest son, now towers above his president-elect father. Granddaughter Kai Trump, who was nine at the last inauguration, now has a huge social media following and a passion for golfing.

First Lady Melania Trump didn't live in the White House for the start of Trump's last tenure, while Barron was in school, but she's packed and ready to go this year.

And that's just three names of the large family circle stemming from the three-times married President-elect Donald Trump.

Former Capitol Police Officer, Harry Dunn, has also been pardoned by President Joe Biden on his last day in office.

The officer helped the January 6 committee probe into the events of that infamous day when people stormed the Capitol building.

“I’m eternally grateful to President Joe Biden," Dunn tells CBS News, the BBC's US media partner.

"Not just for this pre-emptive pardon, but for his leadership and service to this nation," he adds.

He says he wishes it wasn't necessary, but "the political climate we are in now has made the need for one somewhat of a reality".

"I, like all other public servants, was just doing my job and upholding my oath. I will always honor that."

Earlier, we reported that President Biden issued pre-emptive pardons for several figures "threatened with criminal prosecutions", including Dr Anthony Fauci and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mark Milley.
