"Across the country, we are hearing Liberal Democrats are winning; from Scotland to potentially Lands End.

"If I am elected, which it looks like I may be, then I will be doing for the next five years to really make sure I earn the support of my constituents."

Asked if he was hesitant to accept he had won, he replied: "I'm happy to accept it but i just have respect for the count staff and returning officers.

"It does sound extremely positive and, hopefully, we have won North Cornwall for the first time in nine years.

Mr Mann said: "I'm super proud of those people who came out and voted for me this time and over the last nine years."

He added: "I think I could have knocked on another 40,000 doors and it wouldn't have made the difference."
