While Labour’s Jenny Riddell-Carpenter was jubilant, the Conservatives, including Therese Coffey, looked very stunned.

She had won with a 20,000 majority in 2019.

Ms Coffey refused a post-declaration interview and made a swift exit.

Speaking after winning the Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket constituency, he said he got into politics because of his frustrations with the NHS and hospital services in particular.

“We await the result with interest. I feel hopeful people are looking for a change here in East Anglia and Green Party support is clearly on the rise.

He said: “There was a change on the doorstep which allowed us to build increasing confidence once the Kevin Craig story broke. But if Patrick [Spencer, Conservative candidate] does win he will make an excellent MP.

“It is too early for me to give any projection at this moment in time for Waveney Valley, but what I will say Richard [Rout, Conservative candidate] is a very likeable guy and people have responded to that.”

He said: “I don’t think that is necessarily a surprise - the area is dyed-in-the-wool Conservative but I think it will be quite interesting to see who comes second.

“I will give a football analogy. A good percentage of people support their football club all their lives - it’s a part of who they are. And I think the same is true with a good percentage of people from a voting point of view.”

When asked about Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay’s chances of taking the new Waveney Valley constituency, he added: “I think my guys think the Greens are maybe just slightly ahead.”
