She said: “We consider this our vigil into the cold and the heavy fall of snow overnight has given us all a challenge this morning tougher than most days.

“However we are all privileged to have warm safe homes to return to.

“The month has started with some very cold temperatures and we are all reflecting on how this will be impacting those without a warm safe place to live.”

Over in North Yorkshire, staff at Britain’s highest pub, the Tan Hill Inn, in Tan Hill, Richmond, are used to dealing with heavy snow.

“We’re prepared for it as we knew it was coming. We’ve had some locals come in yesterday and we have a family from Australia who are stuck here as well, and they are thrilled as they heard about us when we last got stuck in.

“We have enough stock to last us a month, our chef has prepared a lot of batch food, but hopefully it doesn’t come to that.”
