    The runway at Leeds Bradford Airport is still closed, but airport bosses say they are hoping to reopen it by midday.

    In the latest statement a spokesperson said: “The runway is currently closed, our teams are working hard to clear snow and minimise the impact on flight schedules.

    “For the latest updates on your flight, please contact your airline directly. The long stay and car rental shuttle bus is currently postponed until at least 10:00. Customers are required to walk to the terminal.

    “Please follow the instructions provided at the bus stops and exercise caution while navigating through the car parks.”

    They said there would be another update at 12:00.

    According to the Met Office Bingley had seen 12cm (4.7in) of snowfall by 07:00.

    Northern Powergrid says more than 12,000 customers across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire have been affected by power cuts due to heavy snow and freezing temperatures.

    It said power had been restored to 2,649 customers so far this morning, with the North Yorkshire region the worst affected.

    Director of field operations Steve McDonald said: “Travel and access remains challenging but we’re doing everything we can to keep the power on for our customers.

    "Our fleet of 4x4s and specialist access vehicles are playing an essential role in getting our teams to sites to carry out the necessary repairs.

    “We expect the heavy snow fall to continue throughout today. Our teams will continue to update the customers currently affected.”

  4. Northern advises rail passengers to stay at homepublished at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Northern trains between Leeds, Manchester, York, Sheffield, Doncaster and Bradford have all been cancelled.

    The operator has advised passengers not to travel and said the "position will be reviewed throughout the day".

  5. Stranded vehicles on M1 and more disruption on the roadspublished at 10:18 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    The M1 northbound at Junction 37 for Barnsley is blocked due to stranded vehicles, according to traffic monitoring company Inrix.

    Elsewhere in South Yorkshire, the A1 southbound, at Junction 38, near Doncaster is closed due to a collision between a car and an HGV.

  6. Advice for those under amber warning to 'stay home'published at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Nicky Schiller has been reporting this morning from Headingley, Leeds, where the snow appears to be coming down thick and fast.

    The area falls within the Met Office's amber warning zone - the highest level warning that has been issued during the current weather conditions.

    There are concerns the snow depth may reach up to 40cm in the Pennines.

    Trains to London from Leeds and York are being cancelled and delayed due to heavy snow.

    LNER said services running across the whole network may be cancelled or delayed.

    Tickets for travel on Sunday will be valid for use on Monday, a spokesperson said.

    Drivers and walkers had to struggle along Selby Road in east Leeds early this morning.

  9. Disruption on M1 after lorry jackknifes in snowpublished at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Two lanes of the M1 northbound were closed earlier this morning after an HGV jackknifed in the wintry conditions.

    The incident has now been cleared.

    Two lanes are also closed on the southbound carriageway due to snow.

    Meanwhile, traffic monitoring company Inrix said the M62 in West Yorkshire was "just passable" due to snow between junctions 21 and 23.

  10. Leeds to Halifax trains cancelledpublished at 09:02 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    So far, on the rail network there appears to be minimal disruption.

    However, Northern services between Leeds and Halifax are cancelled, as the line between Brighouse and Halifax is closed, meaning trains are unable to run between Leeds and Halifax via Dewsbury in both directions.

    They will be replaced by busses calling at all stations.

    Services running between Leeds and Halifax via Bradford Interchange are not affected.

    South Yorkshire Transport has advised customers to expect disruption and delays to services on the Supertram network throughout the day.

    Meanwhile, Stagecoach Yorkshire said busses for Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster were unable to leave the depot and were not running until further notice.

    The Harrogate Bus Company said all its services are currently suspended due to extreme weather.

    The Dales bus service is currently suspended, including all services operated by Keighley Bus. The York Pullman Bus 874 to Buckden will not run today.

    In West Yorkshire, Metro said all Bradford services had been recalled to depot and would be monitored regarding improvements in the weather. Bradford Interchange was supposed to reopen today after being closed for a year.

    There are no services out of Leeds, Castleford, Keighley, Halifax or Todmorden.

    Following earlier news of cancellation and delays, Leeds Bradford Airport has now closed its runway.

    A statement said: "Our teams are working hard to clear snow and minimise the impact on flight schedules. Please contact your airline for the most up-to-date information regarding your flight.

    "Some morning departures have been rescheduled to this afternoon. Affected customers will be notified directly by their airline."

    The Met Office has predicted between 3cm and 7cm of snowfall across most of the area covered by the amber alert, with up to 40cm of snow in places above 400m.

    According to our latest figures Bingley, in West Yorkshire, had seen 8cm by 06:00, while Leeming, in North Yorkshire, had had about 5cm.

    And it was a cold start for many with temperatures down to -1.6C in Fylingdales in North Yorkshire.

    National Highways has a severe weather alert in place for snow for England until midnight tonight.

    They have warned that up to 25cm of snow could hit roads in northern England.

    The Woodhead Pass (A628), which connects Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire through the Peak District, is closed in both directions due to snow between Tintwistle and Flouch Roundabout.

    The Snake Pass (A57) is also closed.

    The M62 in West Yorkshire is down to one lane due to snow from Junction 21 to Junction 23 near Huddersfield.

    Woodhead Road (A6024) in Holmfirth is closed in both directions closed due to snow from Fieldhead Lane to Greenfield Road.

  16. Flights cancelled at Leeds Bradford Airportpublished at 07:26 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Several flights to and from Leeds Bradford Airport have been cancelled or delayed this morning due to snowfall.

    In a statement the airport said customers should contact their airline for the most up-to-date information regarding flights.

    Among those to be cancelled are flights to and from Belfast, Dublin and Amsterdam.

    The long stay and car rental shuttle bus are postponed until at least 10:00 GMT with customers asked to walk to the terminal.

    It said: "Snowfall is causing some disruption to flights, our teams are working hard to minimise the impact on flight schedules. We will provide further updates throughout the day."

    The snow is set to linger over higher ground this morning but change to sleet later, with the risk of freezing rain in places. This afternoon the wintry mix will change to rain for most areas, with highs of 2°C (36°F).

    Tonight will see spells of heavy rain moving north-eastwards. Some rain will linger into the early hours, some of it wintry. Lows of 0°C (32°F).

    Tomorrow will see largely cloudy skies with a few clear breaks and wintry showers moving in from the north. Windy. Highs of 3°C (37°F).
