We're going to draw our live coverage to a close now, following confirmation that the body found in Tenerife yesterday is that of Jay Slater.

Almost a month since the 19-year-old was last seen, a Spanish court confirmed that he had been identified through fingerprint tests and his injuries were "consistent with a fall in a rocky area".

The teenager, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, had been missing since 17 June, after visiting an Airbnb rented by two people he had been with at the NRG music festival on the island.

His mother, Debbie Duncan, said "our hearts are broken" following the confirmation, which came after a 29-day search by police, family, friends and volunteers in difficult terrain across a mountainous area of the island.

She described her son, an apprentice bricklayer, as a "beautiful boy", while Jay's former college paid tribute to a "hard-working" young man with a bright future ahead.

  2. How the body found in Jay Slater search was confirmed as missing teenpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 16 July

    Guy Hedgecoe
    Reporting from Tenerife

Today's information has come from the judicial authorities on the island, a local court here on Tenerife dealing with the forensic investigation regarding the body that was found yesterday in the north-west of Tenerife.

What they have said is that fingerprint tests that have been carried out on the body show that it does correspond to Jay Slater, and tests also show the cause of death was multiple traumas caused by a fall in a rocky area.

That comes quite soon after we were also told that documents found on the body belonged to Jay Slater, so everything was already pointing to that notion that this was his body. And the forensic information confirms that.

  3. Watch: BBC visits mountain area where Jay Slater search endedpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 16 July

Jay Slater's body was discovered in a mountainous area of Mesca, on the island of Tenerife, after a 29-day search.

The BBC's Fiona Trott is in the area close to where he was found, and you can watch below as she describes how the search unfolded and the difficult conditions rescue teams endured:

  4. It's really sad for the family - Oswaldtwistle residentpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 16 July

Sarah from Oswaldtwistle standing in front of a shop

Sarah from Oswaldtwistle, Jay Slater's hometown, has been speaking to the BBC after the body found in Tenerife was confirmed as the missing teenager.

“I didn’t know the lad personally… but it’s close to home so it affects you,” she told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“It’s so sad for his mum, dad, his friends and family.”

She said she had tied blue ribbons outside her house to show support to Jay's family and loved ones.

“They’re all still everywhere,” she said. “It’s really sad.”

  5. Jay was a hard-working apprentice with a bright future, says collegepublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 16 July

We've just had a statement from Accrington and Rossendale College, where Jay Slater was an apprentice bricklayer, which says they are "deeply saddened to hear the news" of his death.

"Jay was a hard-working apprentice... with a very bright future ahead of him and our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him."

The statement goes on to acknowledge the "incredibly difficult time" during the weeks Jay was missing, and says it will provide support and resources for those that need it.

  6. Rescue teams battled through difficult terrain during 29-day searchpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 16 July

A mountainous terrain in the Masca area of Tenerife

The search for Jay Slater since his disappearance on 17 June involved his family, friends, police and specialist mountain rescue teams as well as volunteers from several countries.

Tenerife is a volcanic island in the Atlantic ocean archipelago of the Canary Islands, and the area in which he was last seen is full of steep cliffs and gorges.

His body was discovered yesterday by members of a mountain rescue team from the Spanish Civil Guard, near the village of Masca, after a "constant and discreet search" over 29 days. It's believed he was found in a ravine, which is a narrow, steep-sided valley.

Spanish police released video footage of rescuers climbing rock faces and battling through scrub as they had carried out the search.

Part of the clip showed two members of the search team being winched out of the area by helicopter after the body had been found.

They said Jay could have fallen in the steep and inaccessible area where he was discovered.

Charity LBT Global had said yesterday that the body found in the Masca area was close to where Jay's mobile phone was last located.

For holidaymaker Jo Cann, from Hertfordshire, the online noise around Jay's case was a particular surprise.

Sitting by the busy Playa de El Bobo beach, close to the bars and clubs where Jay spent time on his last holiday, she told me: "It's just really sad.

"No-one is thinking of the family, no-one is taking their feelings into account."

Speaking as a mother herself, she added: “I just can’t even begin to imagine what they are going through.”

With the information vacuum now filled with something tangible, the family and friends of a popular young man will hope some of the noise will finally quieten down and give them space to grieve.

Spain's Civil Guard, which yesterday said its rescue teams had found a body believed to be that of Jay Slater, have just released a new statement following confirmation of his death.

They repeat an earlier confirmation from the Canary Islands Higher Court of Justice that the remains have been positively identified as the British teenager through fingerprint tests.

"The result of the preliminary autopsy indicates that the cause of death is due to a fall or precipitation," police say.

  9. We hope family get dignity to mourn, Jay's former schools saypublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 16 July

Jay Slater's former primary and secondary schools earlier released a statement following the discovery of a body in Tenerife yesterday.

Andrew Williams, headteacher at Rhyddings High School, and James McBride headteacher at West End Primary School, said all members of the school communities send their deepest sympathies to anyone who knew Jay .

"As a devoted mother, we know Debbie would have never given up looking for Jay, and she and the family are firmly in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time," the statement said.

"We hope that this tragic discovery will not only dispel any rumours, but allow the family to return with their son and afford them the dignity of their private grief and mourning."

  10. When and where Jay Slater went missingpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 16 July

Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, had not been heard from since the morning of 17 June, when he called friends to say he was lost in a mountainous area and had 1% battery on his phone.

In the early hours of the same day, he reportedly entered a car with two British men he had met during the course of the holiday.

He is believed to have ended up at an Airbnb rental in Masca, a tiny settlement in a rural national park, about 40 minutes drive north from his accommodation.

His friends, Brad Hargreaves and Lucy Law, said they spoke to him between 07:30 and 08:50 BST that morning, when he said he had missed a bus and was attempting to walk back.

Spanish police called off the land search for the apprentice bricklayer at the end of June after helicopters, drones and search dogs were deployed to find him, but said the investigation into his disappearance continued.

They said in their statement yesterday they had carried out and "incessant and discreet" search over the past 29 days.

  11. Questions remain over Jay Slater's death after apparent fall in remote areapublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 16 July

    Jonny Humphries
    Reporting from Tenerife

After weeks of speculation, conspiracy theories and even abuse, Jay Slater's family now know where he is and ultimately what became of their "beautiful boy".

There are still details that need to be confirmed, if at all possible, such as why Jay ended up in such remote, dangerous terrain and how he came to fall to his death.

But the lurid conspiracies seem to have been dissolved in the face of evidence suggesting a tragic accident.

On the strip in Playa de las Americas, where Jay was enjoying his last night out, British tourists seem wary of discussing the case.

Some repeat back speculative theories that gained particular traction on social media. Others suggest the full truth about how Jay sustained his fatal injuries may never be known.

  12. Locals invited to attend church service in Oswaldtwistlepublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 16 July

More now from Lancashire, where residents of Jay Slater's hometown in Oswaldtwistle have been invited to join a service this evening following confirmation of his death.

Rev Matt Smith from West End Methodist Church said the church would be opening from 19:00 to 20:00 BST "to give them that opportunity to come together and to just share their feelings, their thoughts and their prayers with each other".

As our reporter mentioned in the previous post, blue ribbons have been tied to trees and lamp posts across Oswaldtwistle and on the railings outside the church to show support for the family.

Two bunches of flowers with blue ribbons on one bunch.

It’s the news that people here have been expecting for the past day, but nevertheless, news which is devastating to receive.

Blue ribbons - which have been tied to the town's railings and buildings since Jay’s disappearance - flutter outside the entrance to Oswaldtwistle’s West End Methodist Church.

It’s here where people in the community will be able to join together in support of the Slater family later today. A single candle stands alongside a framed photograph of a smiling Jay.

The Reverend, Matt Smith, says he wants the family to know the community are here for them.

  14. Family to face 'many more hurdles' in the coming days, charity sayspublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 16 July

British overseas missing persons charity LBT Global, which has been working with Jay Slater's family, says there will be "many more hurdles" in the coming days after his death was confirmed.

"We will work with them to make this horrific time as easy as possible," the charity's chief executive Matthew Searle says.

"We are working with the family now to sort out the next steps of taking Jay home, recovery of his belongings and laying him to rest."

He goes on to say travel timings or funeral arrangements are not being released yet.

Searle says he hopes "this is the end of all the hurtful comments on social media and elsewhere", after the family previously condemned online conspiracy theories about Jay's disappearance.

"Honestly lost for words. Always the happiest and most smiley person in the room, you was (sic) one of a kind Jay and you'll be missed more than you know.

  17. Documents on body suggested it was Jay Slaterpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 16 July

An earlier court statement today said that documentation found on the body discovered on Tenerife yesterday belonged to Jay Slater.

"It is confirmed that the documentation that was on the body found yesterday in the mountains of Masca belongs to Jay Slater," it said

It went on to say that "everything suggests that it was an accidental fall" but the results of the official investigation into the death would take more time.

Charity LBT Global said yesterday said the remains were found with the 19-year-old's clothes and possessions near his last known location.

    Rob Corp
    Live reporter

We're pausing our live coverage following the discovery in Tenerife of human remains close to where the UK teenager Jay Slater went missing last month.

While there has been no formal identification yet, the Spanish Civil Guard said that the evidence points to the body being Jay.

Separately, the missing persons charity LBT Global said the remains were found close to the clothes and possessions of the 19-year-old, who comes from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire.

It's been 29 days since he went missing after a night out - leading to a major search in the north-west of the island.

LBT Global said in a statement it was "supporting the family at this distressing time and ask for everyone to afford them space and privacy to come to terms with the news".

We will restart this page if there are any significant developments - but in the meantime our news story will keep you up to date.
