    Westbound lanes on New York's I-90 have re-opened to traffic after several hours of closure around the crash site in Pembroke.

    Eastbound lanes remain closed, and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes because of delays.

    New York State Patrol have asked witnesses who may have dashboard camera video of today's crash to immediately contact authorities.

    According to witnesses, the bus lost control and crossed the highway median before over-correcting and crashing into the shoulder of the roadway and "overturning", police say in a new statement.

    A family assistance centre has been created at a senior community centre in Buffalo, the statement adds.

    Victims and their families are able to meet there for reunification.

    The statement adds that medical personnel and investigators remain at the crash site.

    "Emergency personnel, including State Police, local first responders, and multiple medical helicopters, are on scene providing aid and transporting victims to area hospitals."

    Mercy Flight, an organisation providing helicopter and ground rescues for medical emergencies, has detailed its response to the crash.

    So far, the organisation has provided eight helicopter flights, the group told BBC News in an email, transporting a total of five patients to hospital.

    In addition, Mercy Flight sent 17 ambulances and "Paramedic Fly Cars" - vehicles that deliver medical personnel but do not transport patients.

    Six patients were transported to hospital by ambulance, while another nine were "transported by other means with our EMTs".

    "From our perspective this was an extremely well-coordinated effort on the part of Genesee County Incident Command," the organisation said, adding that other patients were also treated by agencies other than their own.

    We just heard from doctors at Erie County Medical Center, who received 24 patients from the crash. Child patients were taken to a different hospital.

    The Erie County doctors gave us more insight into what happened after the crash.

    Four medical helicopters airlifted critical victims from the crash site to receive emergency treatment, doctors say.

    As the only level one trauma centre in the area, the team had to clear their emergency department for large volume of patients, who had injuries ranging from "severe" fractures to head and blunt trauma.

    Some of the patients were bilingual and spoke English, but many did not, so translators and translation devices were also used.

    The passengers on the tour bus were mainly visitors from India, China and the Philippines.

    Speaking to the press now, Erie County Medical Center says they received a total of 24 patients, 20 of whom are still actively receiving care.

    Two went to the operating room and others were moved to the intensive care unit, the medical team said.

    Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has confirmed that rescue crews have been travelling into neighbouring Genesee County, where the crash occurred, and are assisting.

    In a post on X, Poloncarz confirmed that there are "multiple fatalities" due to the crash.

    "There are many serious injuries, and as was just announced by New York State Police, there are multiple fatalities," he wrote.

    He urged people to avoid the area, including "all local roads near the scene" as officials work to divert the major traffic jam that has formed behind the crash site.

    A local hospital says 21 of the crash victims are at their trauma centre.

    All the patients received at Erie County Medical Center are adults, spokesperson Peter Cutler told me, and patients under the age of 16 are going to another children's hospital in the area.

    Translators are at the hospital helping victims, the majority of whom were tourists from India, China and the Philippines, authorities said.

    There's no update on the condition of the patients at this time, but we will bring you more after a hospital press conference in around half an hour.

    The statement from the group, external urges anybody nearby to call in to make an appointment to donate as soon as possible.

    "This is one of those moments when your action can directly save lives,” said Diina. “Please donate. If you can’t, help us by spreading the word."
