Life is starting to return to normal across west Dorset. The A35 between Bridport and Dorchester is fully reopened, although only expect one lane open on the dual carriageway.

With many schools closing for the day, children and teenagers flock to their nearest piece of sloped ground.

In Dorchester, that’s Maumbury rings - a Roman amphitheatre turned sled arena. I wonder if the Romans ever suspected they had made the perfect snow-day stadium.

This time of day would usually see many parents departing work for the school run, but with schools closed, the roads are quiet and thawing, albeit treacherous.

This afternoon, as the snowfall is easing across the county, don’t become complacent. It’s still very sludgy out on the roads and pavements and, if you are driving, make sure to leave plenty of stopping distance between vehicles.

  10. Do trains run in the snow?published at 12:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

South Western Railway (SWR) says yes, they do.

But after heavy snowfall, passengers can expect some delays and even cancellations.

Snow-covered tracks prevent trains from moving between tracks, and frozen tracks and power cables can stop services.

When a lot of snow is expected, SWR runs empty passenger trains and snow ploughs through the night to clear tracks,

Hot air blowers, steam jets, brushes, scrapes and anti-freeze are used by specialist teams to make sure services run smoothly.

Heavy rain and ice make tracks slippery, so train drivers have to brake more slowly.

Large overhanging branches are trimmed to prevent any debris from blocking the tracks in snowy weather, and rail heaters stop some tracks from freezing.
