  1. Tories hold Solihull West and Shirleypublished at 05:05 British Summer Time 5 July

The Conservatives have kept Solihull West and Shirley, with Neil Shastri-Hurst the new MP.

However, they lost a 26.2% share of the vote since the 2019 election.

Shastri-Hurst got 16,284 votes, while Labour's Deirdre Fox received 11,664 votes.

The previous MP was Julian Knight, who lost the Tory whip after sexual assault allegations were reported to the Met Police in December 2022. Knight has been told there will be no criminal investigation.

Knight stood as an independent MP in this election but took only 594 seats.

  2. 'We should wish Labour well in what lies ahead'published at 04:59 British Summer Time 5 July

Conservative Andrew Mitchell has held Sutton Coldfield, a stronghold constituency for the Tories, but his majority was cut.

He held with 18,502 votes (a vote share loss of more than 20%), while Labour's Rob Pocock received 15,959. Reform UK got 8,213.

He said it was clear Labour would be forming a government.

"Clearly tonight this is a devastating result for my party and I want to congratulate the Labour Party on the results they have achieved tonight," he said.

"I know the huge challenges we face domestically and internationally and for the sake of our country we should all wish them well in tackling what lies ahead."

Mitchell has been the constituency's MP since 2001, winning the seat for the seventh time.

Most of the constituency has had a Conservative MP for the last 139 years.

  3. Labour gains Walsall and Bloxwichpublished at 04:50 British Summer Time 5 July

    Valerie Vaz

Labour has gained Walsall and Bloxwich from the Conservatives, who finished in fourth place.

Valerie Vaz polled 12,514 votes, finishing ahead of independent Aftab Nawaz with 7,600, and Reform's Elaine Williams, who had 7,293. Tory Shannon Lloyd got 6,679 votes.

This is a new seat made up of parts of the old Walsall North and Walsall South constituencies.

The Conservatives were defending a narrow advantage from 2019 on a calculated "notional" result.

The result means Ms Vaz, Walsall South MP since 2010, has stayed in Parliament.

  4. Labour’s Jess Phillips 'likely to be run close'published at 04:44 British Summer Time 5 July

    Simon Gilbert
    BBC Political Reporter, Birmingham

    Jody McIntyre

The chatter in the room is that Jody McIntyre (centre), the Workers Party of Great Britain candidate in Birmingham Yardley, is likely to run Labour’s Jess Phillips close.

Certainly the Labour majority of 13,141 from the 2019 notional result looks as if it is going to be seriously slashed.

Mr McIntyre has been campaigning on a pro-Palestine platform and is thought to have attracted large numbers of Muslim voters.

Not long now until we find out for certain.

  6. Labour gain Wolverhampton North Eastpublished at 04:33 British Summer Time 5 July

    Jane Stevenson

Labour has gained Wolverhampton North East from the Conservatives, who had won the constituency in 2019 for the first time since 1987.

This time Sureena Brackenridge claimed victory with 14,282 votes, ahead of Tory Jane Stevenson (pictured), who polled 8,860. Reform's Paul Williams had 7,721 votes.

The new MP was raised in the Ashmore Park area of the constituency and is a graduate of the University of Wolverhampton, studying biochemistry.

  8. 'There will have to be change at the top'published at 04:23 British Summer Time 5 July

    Wendy Morton

Wendy Morton has held the Aldridge-Brownhills seat for the Tories, getting 15,901 votes.

She told BBC Radio WM the Conservatives needed to rebuild trust with the electorate and that "there will have to be change at the top" to achieve this.

Labour candidate Luke Davies received 11,607 votes, while Reform candidate Graham Eardley came in third place with 9,903 votes.

Wendy Morton was a junior minister under Boris Johnson and was chief whip during Liz Truss's short leadership in 2022.

  11. Labour hold Wolverhampton South Eastpublished at 04:17 British Summer Time 5 July

    Pat McFadden

Labour's Pat McFadden is to serve a sixth term in Wolverhampton South East, a seat traditionally dominated by the party.

His majority was shrunk from more than 8,500 to just 1,235 when he achieved victory in 2019.

But this time he has claimed a majority of 9,188, polling 16,800 votes, as Reform, with candidate Carl Hardwick, secured second place, getting 7,612 votes. Tory Victoria Wilson had 5,654.

This area has elected a Labour MP at every election since 1945.

  12. Tories hold Meriden and Solihull Eastpublished at 04:12 British Summer Time 5 July

Saqib Bhatti said it was a "bittersweet" night, as he held his seat for the Conservatives in Meriden and Solihull East, with 16,792 votes.

"[It's a] great privilege to be returned and I'm really grateful to my constituents for placing that faith in me," he said.

"It's obviously not an easy night, lots of my friends and colleagues aren't being returned today so it's bittersweet."

Labour's Sarah Alan received 12,208 votes while Reform UK's Ian Sedgley came in third place with 8,753 votes.

Claim and counter claim in Birmingham Ladywood.

Independent Akhmed Yakoob (pictured), who came third in the West Midlands mayoral election, thinks he's won it.

Labour think it's close, but that Shabana Mahmood, the shadow justice secretary, will be OK.

She retained Ladywood in 2019 with a giant, and only slightly reduced, majority. The calculated effect of boundary changes for this election make the nominal Labour lead even bigger - 32,583. With this notional majority, a Labour defeat would be extraordinary.

  15. Tories 'forgot to lead with integrity'published at 04:01 British Summer Time 5 July

The Conservative leader of Walsall Council, Garry Perry, said voters had turned away from the Conservative Party because of "chaos" and "disunity".

"They forgot to lead with integrity," he told BBC Radio WM.

Commenting on Reform UK's popularity, Mr Perry said: "Of course Reform have risen when Nigel Farage entered the fray, it's a campaign built around one man."

He also said there was not necessarily a desire for a Labour government, but that there was apathy for both main parties in the UK.

  16. Labour gains West Bromwichpublished at 03:55 British Summer Time 5 July

Labour has taken the new seat of West Bromwich with the Tories taking second place from Reform by just over 200 votes.

Sarah Coombes is the new MP for the area, having got 16,872 votes.

Ms Coombes works for an environmental charity, having previously worked for former West Bromwich East MP Tom Watson when he was Labour Deputy Leader. She has also worked for London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Conservative Will Goodhand got 7,318 votes, and Reform UK candidate Ray Nock got 7,101 votes.

    Sarah Coombes

The area's former Conservative MP Nicola Richards said last year she would be standing down due to "a change in domestic circumstances".

She then stood to be the Conservative candidate for Solihull West & Shirley but lost out.

She had been the first Conservative MP for the constituency area since 1935, in an area where the Leave vote in the Brexit referendum was 67%.

  17. Reform candidate 'fairly confident' about overtaking Toriespublished at 03:49 British Summer Time 5 July

    Andrew Southall

In Dudley, Reform candidate Andrew Southall has told me he's feeling "fairly confident" he has overtaken the Tories.

Asked to predict the result, he said "it's going to be tight", adding: "We've given the Tories a run for their money."

"Whatever happens, I'm pleased with what we've achieved," Mr Southall said.

  18. Tipton and Wednesbury: 'The work to deliver promises starts now'published at 03:43 British Summer Time 5 July

    Antonia Bance

Labour has taken Tipton and Wednesbury from the Conservatives, with a 11.5% swing to Labour.

Antonia Bance, the new MP, got 11,755 votes, while Conservative incumbent Shaun Bailey got 8,370, narrowly beating Reform UK's Jack Sabharwal with 8,019 votes.

Bance said it was the honour of her life and that "we want our future our back".

"The work to deliver promises starts now," she added.

    Election results

Tipton and Wednesbury is a new constituency made up of parts of three former seats: West Bromwich West, West Bromwich East, and Wolverhampton South East.

Shaun Bailey's win in West Bromwich West in 2019 saw the election of the first Tory MP for the area since 1935.

As we know, 2019 was the first election since the Brexit referendum, with Tipton and Wednesbury being a very strongly Leave-voting area, with an estimated 74% voting Leave.

  19. Labour performance in some areas 'disastrous'published at 03:38 British Summer Time 5 July

    Rob Mayor
    Political editor, West Midlands

A source with knowledge of the Labour campaign in Birmingham tells me the party's performance in some parts of the city is 'disastrous'.

Whilst they are confident they will retain all their seats and retake Birmingham Northfield from the Conservatives, the source says the party needs to 'reflect' on how it has handled the issue of Gaza and expects majorities to be greatly reduced.

    Andrew Mitchell

Conservative Andrew Mitchell, who is attempting to win Sutton Coldfield for a seventh time, has arrived ahead of the declaration, which was due at about 03:30 BST.

Most of this constituency has had a Tory MP for the last 139 years. Mr Mitchell had a majority of 19,272 in 2019.

Just to reiterate what we already know, it's very, very close in Sutton Coldfield.
