Summary

  • The Israeli military says the bodies of four more deceased hostages have been returned from Gaza

  • Formal identification of the hostages will now take place, the Israel Defense Forces says

  • It comes as Israel will reportedly not reopen the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt on Wednesday and will reduce the flow of aid into the territory

  • Israeli media and Reuters news agency report the decision came after Hamas returned just four of 28 Israeli hostages' bodies on Monday

  • The IDF says it has identified the bodies of those four hostages - they are named as Guy Illouz, Bipin Joshi, Yossi Sharabi and Daniel Peretz

  • In Gaza, the Palestinian Civil Defence tells the BBC that seven people have been killed by Israeli fire in two separate incidents - Israel's military says it fired at people who had crossed the line where its troops have withdrawn to

    Reporting from Ramallah

Our Palestinian colleagues have been speaking to families of the roughly 1,700 detainees from Gaza who are expected to be released by Israel.

Muhammad Hasan Saeed Dawood, 50, arrived at Nasser Hospital to collect his son, who he says was arrested by Israeli forces at a checkpoint.

“This is a very beautiful feeling - happy, a day of joy,” he says.

“We call it a national holiday, that our detainees are being released despite the cost of the war, the martyrs, the injured, and the destruction in Gaza.”

    • As a reminder, the Israeli government does not allow international news organisations, including the BBC, into Gaza to report freely, so many outlets rely on Gaza-based reporters for coverage

Omri Miran, 48, has been pictured reuniting with his wife Lishay at the initial reception point in southern Israel.

Lishay said she last saw him being driven away in his own car.

In April 2025, Hamas released a video showing Omri marking his 48th birthday. In response, Lishay said: "I always said and I always knew, Omri is a survivor."

Here in Hostages Square, I’ve been speaking to Harvey Betsalel from Toronto, Canada.

He and his wife are in Israel for a family bar mitzvah - a ceremony that marks the transition into Jewish adulthood - and say they "feel that history is being made in front of us".

Having all the hostages back will bring "a total feeling of relief, joy, happiness", he says.

"I'm just so happy for every Jew in the world and every person here."

Nearby, 30-year-old Pelet tells me he is feeling overwhelmed.

"I'm grateful for this moment. We still don't know what it will look like, the consequences of this agreement. We need both sides to respect it," he says.

    Palestinian security

As we've been reporting, buses believed to be carrying Palestinian prisoners are now leaving the Ofer prison in the occupied West Bank.

I've just arrived in Ramallah, where hundreds of people are anxiously waiting for their relatives to be freed from Israeli prisons in the coming minutes.

Amro Abdullah, 24, says he is waiting for his cousin Rashid Omar, 48, who was arrested in July 2005 and sentenced to life in prison by an Israeli court after being found guilty of murder.

“He is ready to embrace freedom,” Amro tells me in a bustling conference hall, surrounded by dozens of other families.

Many others here are nervous to see their loved ones - but happy to see a possible end to the war.

“I want peace,” Amro says. “I want to live a happy life, safe and peaceful, without occupation and without restrictions.”

  18. Confusion replaces celebrations in Ramallahpublished at 09:34 BST 13 October

    Lucy Williamson
Middle East correspondent, reporting from Ramallah

Crows of people, including some dressed in blue camo and security vests, gathered outside

As families gather in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank to wait for prisoners being released today, confusion has replaced the celebrations I’ve seen here before.

Israel has made it clear it wants to avoid the jubilant scenes that surrounded prisoners arriving here in previous hostage deals, when large crowds waved Hamas flags.

Today, there’s a heavy Palestinian security presence, and the Beitunia crossing point is empty.

Instead, families have been corralled into a reception hall in the centre of Ramallah. Many say they’ve been told not to greet their relatives with flags, sweets, or even set out chairs for visitors.

The mood now is less one of open celebration, more of confusion. Families say the speed of this deal means the list of Palestinian prisoners set for release today has been constantly changing overnight.

Some waiting this morning have been told their relatives will be deported and won’t arrive home as planned.

One man, waiting for a nephew who’s been in jail for 23 years, says the past two years has been difficult for Palestinians, but that the release of these prisoners made the war in Gaza worthwhile.

  19. IDF confirms 13 hostages handed over to Red Crosspublished at 09:30 BST 13 October
