On the roads, National Highways has warned up to 25cm of snow could affect roads in northern England, while snow has shut the A628 Woodhead Pass which connects Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire through the Peak District

Both Liverpool and Manchester airports have reopened after clearing snow from runways, though some flights have been cancelled and others delayed as a result.

Some flights were cancelled early on Sunday before airport crews cleared the snow from the runways.

A Liverpool John Lennon Airport spokesperson said though flights were operating again, the bad weather had led to a number of delays and cancellations.

At Manchester Airport, a spokesperson urged passengers to "make sure they are dressed for the weather", and pack supplies including snacks and a phone charger.

Snowfall overnight has led to the closure of the main route between the Isle of Man's capital and the north, but most roads can be used by motorists, police have confirmed.

The Isle of Man Constabulary said the A18 Mountain Road was closed due to the conditions, but "most roads across the island were clear or passable with care".

The police confirmed the Sloc was also closed due to snowfall but said "arterial routes and most roads across the island are clear or passable with care, thanks largely to pre-treatment by our colleagues in the Department of Infrastructure".

Mr Murray said the flow of traffic can “help the situation a little bit” on roads, but also leads to more incidents.

He advised those who are choosing to drive in the wintry conditions to “slow down if you can” and "leave plenty of space between yourself and other cars".

“We stood at the bus stop for about half an hour or forty minutes and there's no buses at all so we thought we'd go for a walk and called in at the hardware shop," Paul said.

"Whilst in there we saw this sledge so my wife said 'get the sledge', so hence, we’re now walking around Saddleworth to see if we can find a safe, elevated road that we can go down!"

Most of the main roads in the Saddleworth villages remain passable after around six centimetres (2.3 inches) of snow fell overnight.

But further away from main roads, drivers are having real problems if they decide to venture out.

Shops and cafes are open as usual in the centre of Uppermill with paths and steps cleared ready for customers but it appears only a few hardy dog walkers are braving the weather so far.
