    SNP figures are in shock.

They knew they would face losses tonight, but the scale of their defeat is so much greater than many in the party had anticipated.

Their absolute worst case scenario is looking like it may well come true.

Already thoughts are turning to how the party can reset - there is, after all, a small matter of a Holyrood election to fight in less than two years' time.

  3. Labour gain Glasgow North East from SNPpublished at 04:01 British Summer Time 5 July

  4. Tough to take says Stephen Flynnpublished at 04:00 British Summer Time 5 July

"The numbers speak for themselves," a dejected Stephen Flynn tells BBC Scotland.

The SNP's Westminster leader says he is delighted to be re-elected but it's a bittersweet night.

"I am watching on as so many of my colleagues and friends are losing their seats and of course that’s tough to take," he says.

He adds it's a bleak night for the party, and they need to reflect on why voters chose Labour over the SNP.

  5. Lib Dems back as a major force, says Scottish leaderpublished at 03:59 British Summer Time 5 July

The Liberal Democrats have returned as a “major force in British politics,” after “a few tough elections,” the party's Scottish leader insists.

Alex Cole-Hamilton says he is “delighted” as the BBC’s exit poll suggests the party will gain three seats in Scotland.

“The Liberal Democrats are going to take a huge leap forward - not just in Scotland, where we’re already nailed-on for our three gains that we were targeting - but across the British Isles, the Lib Dems are back.”

The MSP for Edinburgh Western adds: “I said at the start of this campaign, we’re going to retain more Lib Dem MPs than nationalist MPs onto the green benches at the House of Commons. That has happened, and my goodness by a country mile it has too."

Another Labour gain, this time Rutherglen which was won by the SNP at the last general election. Labour's Michael Shanks took the seat in a by-election in October last year. It came after Margaret Ferrier, the incumbent MP who had been sanctioned for breaches of Covid restrictions lost her seat via a recall petition.

  12. Victory secures Flynn's power base ahead of future leadership bidpublished at 03:46 British Summer Time 5 July

    Andrew Kerr
BBC Scotland political correspondent in Aberdeen

The SNP’s Westminster leader is heading back to Westminster - having won in Aberdeen South.

This is really significant as it secures his power base and ensures he can attempt to be SNP leader after the 2026 Holyrood election.

However, it looked shaky at times with the vote spread among Labour and the Conservatives too.

Flynn gracefully acknowledged what a “difficult” night this has been for the SNP in his winner’s speech - saying “we are going to be beat well” and that hopefully they can “regain the trust that has been lost at this election”.

Again, no mention of independence like his colleague in Aberdeen North.

  13. SNP hope they can persuade voters backpublished at 03:45 British Summer Time 5 July

    Kirsten Campbell
    BBC Scotland political correspondent

Stephen Flynn has won his seat, but acknowledges that as a party the SNP has been well beaten.

Sources put the poor results down to the turmoil the party has faced over the past year.

But they’re convinced they’re not in a bad place for the Holyrood elections in two years' time and remain hopeful that they can persuade voters to back them in the Scottish Parliament.

SNP going to "be beat well" says party's Stephen Flynn

Stephen Flynn says it is "quite clear the Scottish National Party is having a difficult night".

The SNP's Westminster leader says his party is going to be beat in Scotland and beat well, something they have not experienced for a long time.

"Now is a time we must learn and listen to what the people of Scotland have told us." he says.

He adds that the party is down but not out and will build back the trust the SNP hold so dear.

  15. Flynn will be a key voice in the SNP's futurepublished at 03:43 British Summer Time 5 July

    Georgia Roberts
BBC Scotland political correspondent in Aberdeen

Stephen Flynn’s victory in Aberdeen South has been greeted with heavy relief here amongst SNP candidates, while their colleagues are all effectively conceding defeat tonight in North Lanarkshire before the results are in.

"That’s important for the future of our party” one tells me when I break the news to him.

Without a doubt Stephen Flynn will be a key voice in forging the path ahead for a deeply wounded SNP.

  16. 'We've got a lot of work to get on with' - Douglas Alexanderpublished at 03:42 British Summer Time 5 July

Douglas Alexander, the new MP for Lothian East, says: "We'll focus on the people's priorities, whether that is ending the economic chaos and bringing economic stability, rebuilding growth in the economy, building investment into our National Health Service."

The Labour stalwart will return to government and goes on to say his party will establish GB Energy which will have its HQ in Scotland.

"We've got a lot of work to get on with, starting tomorrow."

He says he thinks people are "pretty scunnered" with the SNP government at Holyrood which has been in power longer than the Iphone has existed, and they're "definitely scunnered" with the Tories at Westminster.

"We need to rebuild trust. We need to deliver," he says.
