The results are coming thick and fast now – but a pattern is emerging.

If we zoom out to the nationwide scoreboard, the SNP are holding onto about 30% of Scottish voters.

But Labour have vaulted ahead of them, with 39% of the Scottish vote, while the Tories have collapsed to 11.

The nature of the First Past the Post beast has turned on the SNP – those figures have so far seen Labour pick up 22 seats to the SNP’s four.

Another Scottish Labour MP has been elected in Glasgow - this time it’s John Grady for Glasgow East.

He took the seat with some 15,500 votes, nearly 4,000 votes ahead of the second place candidate - the SNP’s David Linden.

Scottish Greens and the Reform party gained over 2,000 votes each, with the Scottish Conservatives gaining just over 1,100.

Mr Grady thanked the voters of Glasgow East “for putting their trust in me as their MP.”

He adds: “Many people have voted Scottish Labour for the first time, or the first time in many years.

A huge cheer went up at the Glasgow North East declaration as it was revealed that the Scottish Labour candidate Maureen Burke received some 15,000 votes. The SNP candidate got 11,002 votes.

Glasgow has named the first of its six MPs in the 2024 election - and it’s a Labour gain. The party is hoping to take them all.

Burke was moved to tears while thanking her family for “their love, support and encouragement”.

She says her achievement as a working class woman “is only possible under the Labour Party”.

And a gasp rippled across the crowd as it was revealed that the Reform candidate gained around 1,000 more votes than the Scottish Conservative candidate.

'Very difficult and damaging night' for SNP - Swinney

SNP leader John Swinney says tonight's result is "very poor" for the SNP and will require the party to do "a lot of soul searching".

Swinney says his party will have to look very carefully at what has happened in this election and learn from it.

He says his party has been "facing more inwards" instead of outwards as they should have been and the party now has to build trust by delivering for the people of Scotland.

Swinney says opinion polls show about half the population of Scotland still support independence but acknowledges this has not been reflected in the outcome of the election which the party must look at and reflect on.

  17. Labour loser sounded more upbeat than SNP winnerpublished at 04:10 British Summer Time 5 July

    Kevin Keane
    BBC Scotland News in Dundee

At the Dundee Central count it was tight and there were some worried-looking faces in the SNP camp.

Chris Law held the seat which had been the largest notional SNP majority - by just 675 votes.

His acceptance speech was low-key, thanking supporters and promising to serve his constituents.

The most upbeat speech - sounding more like a winner - came from the losing Labour candidate describing it as a “remarkable result” for this independence supporting city.

Dundee is now a marginal SNP seat - something unimaginable not that long ago.

  19. Curtice says swing to Labour in Scotland looks slightly bigger than predictedpublished at 04:08 British Summer Time 5 July

Prof Sir John Curtice says, if anything, the swing from SNP to Labour is even slightly bigger than expected from the exit poll.

The leading psephologist says six seats for the SNP is the kind of level they used to get before the "tsunami of 2015".

He says the SNP have to ask themselves why the Labour Party has more or less doubled their share of the vote in Scotland, when in England Labour are doing no more than holding there own.

"There is no doubt that in Scotland the Labour Party has enjoyed their best results of the night and that the SNP cannot simply regard this as the consequence of a wider UK-wide tsunami," he says.

"Rather this is a tsunami that's hit them in particular north of the border.."
