  5. 'I hope Lichfield remembers me with affection'published at 04:27 British Summer Time 5 July

    Michael Fabricant

Internal fighting within the Conservative Party over the past few years was a key factor in its poor performance tonight, Sir Michael Fabricant said.

The losing Conservative candidate for Lichfield, who had held the seat since 1997, said the succession of Tory prime ministers did not "inspire confidence" across the country.

"I like to think it's not a personal referendum on my performance as an MP but rather the failure I think of the past few years of the Conservative government," he added.

He said he hoped the people of Lichfield would remember him "with affection" and he was not sure what he would do next, "probably" a holiday.

"Someone has suggested I do Strictly Come Dancing but I'm not sure!"
