The mayor of London has described "the scenes of disorder and violence" in London on Wednesday evening as "completely unacceptable".

More than 100 arrests were made as disorder following the Southport knife attack spread to the capital.

"There is no place for criminality on our streets and I fully support the Met Police taking action against those intent on violence, causing disorder and spreading division in our city," Sadiq Khan says.

“At this time of rising tensions, we all have a responsibility to pull together and reject hateful narratives, and ensure our towns and cities are safe and welcoming for everyone.

“I remain in close contact with Met leaders and will do everything I can to support all of London’s communities, particularly those who are feeling vulnerable and targeted.

“In London, our diversity is our greatest strength and we will always stand united against those spreading hate and division.”

This morning in Southport people who live here are bringing bags full of teddy bears for Alice, Elsie and Bebe and placing them very carefully on a blanket.

Late last night, before the rain started, they went to the different areas surrounding Hart Street where tributes have been left, and collected all the teddies and dolls to stop them being ruined by the weather.

Connor is one of those involved and says it’s just the “right thing to do” and residents here plan to take care of these tributes for as long as possible for the little girls and their families.

This is yet another sign of the kindness, generosity and community spirit I’ve seen here in Southport this week.
