Bradford Council has reported Respect's George Galloway to the police for allegedly breaking election law for tweeting about exit polls before polls closed, the BBC has learned.
The returning officer made the report to officers after the party leader retweeted Respect's own exit poll before voting finished at 22:00 BST.
He is standing in the Bradford West constituency.

Alan Johnson, the Labour candidate for Hull and West Hessle, has said the BBC Exit Poll is "unbelievable".
He said: "Let's wait and see but it's inconsistent with every other opinion poll and it's very unusual for every poll to be that wrong.
"In a sense all three parties have lost."

David Cameron launched his election campaign in Halifax and there was a good reason for that - it's a massive Tory target.
Labour held it last time but only just, with a majority of 1,472.
Conservative candidate Philip Allott is running again despite making claims in 2010 of voter fraud among the Labour-supporting local Asian community.
He's up against Holly Lynch of Labour who replaces Linda Riordan after she made a late decision to stand down for health reasons.
More on the rumours that Ed Ball may be set to lose his Morley and Outwood seat.
BBC political reporter Louise Martin has been hot on his heels trying to pin him down for a chat.
But BBC Radio Leeds just tweeted, external: "We were not given the opportunity to talk to Ed Balls. I understand he has now left the building."

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper says the exit polls are "puzzling."
Speaking at Wakefield Thorne's Park sports centre, where she is defending her Pontefract, Castleford and Normanton seat, she said: "The polls don't reflect the discussions I've had with candidates and the visits to target seats and on the doorstep.
"I think it's just one of those nights where we are going to have to wait and see."

There are tables as far as the eye can see at the First Direct Arena in Leeds tonight.
There are eight seats being counted in the city tonight, including Elmet & Rothwell, Leeds Central, Leeds East, Leeds North East, Leeds North West, Leeds West, Morley & Outwood and Pudsey.
We are expecting a rush of results between 04:00 and 05:00 BST.

Rumours are circulating that Respect's George Galloway has lost his seat in Bradford West.
Radio Leeds' Andrew Edwards said the word at the count is that party leader has lost out to Labour's Naseem Shah.
BBC Look North's Spencer Stokes tweeted, external that retiring Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe says Labour is confident Mr Galloway will lose.
The reports are unconfirmed but we'll bring you all the official news as soon as the count is in.

Radio Leeds' Larry Budd tells us a UKIP source at the Halifax count has just said: "The Conservatives might as well put the champagne on ice in Calder Valley."
Since the 1974 general election, this has been West Yorkshire's classic "Bellwether" marginal seat, with the winning party finishing up in government.
We are expecting results from this must-watch seat at 05:00 BST.

One of the seats that Labour is targeting tonight is Dewsbury, where the Conservatives held a small majority in 2010 of 1,562.
Traditionally a Labour seat, boundary changes five years ago have boosted the Tory vote with the Labour party complaining the addition of more rural areas increased the Conservative share by some 26,000 votes.
Simon Reevell currently holds the seat.

Labour's Scunthorpe candidate Nic Dakin tells Radio Humberside he's "hopeful" of retaining his seat.
Mr Dakin won the seat ahead of the Conservative party with a majority of under 3,000 votes in 2010.
Labour stalwart Hilary Benn says he is 'sceptical' about the exit polls.
He told BBC Radio Leeds' Andrew Edwards: "It doesn't square with what I've found on the ground."
Mr Benn, son of the late Tony, is defending one of the party's safest seats in Leeds Central.

The scandal-hit constituency of Rotherham could be one of the most high-profile contests of the night.
It has been a safe Labour seat since 1945 but UKIP has put it at the top of its list of South Yorkshire "winnable seats".
Former local children's hospice manager Sarah Champion won a by-election to take the seat after sitting MP Denis McShane was jailed for false accounting in 2012.
But UKIP cut Labour's majority by half in that contest and will be hoping they can wipe out the difference all together.
It's the final election night as MP for Labour's Gerry Sutcliffe in Bradford South who is standing down..
The constituency has been held by the former leader of Bradford City Council and junior minister for the last five general elections, having taken the seat in 1994 with a majority of 10,000.
On standing down, he told BBC Radio Leeds: "I'll be 62 next week and I've been in parliament for 21 years. I still want to be involved in politics but I want to work with local politicians to convince government to put more investment in Yorkshire."

Rumours are swirling that Ed Balls is losing the fight to hold his seat of Morley and Outwood.
He's been speaking to the BBC and said: "For eight years, I have been fighting a constituency where the majority is much tighter.
"We fought very hard in 2010, people predicted I might lose and we won by 1,000.
"Today, the mood on the doorstep has been really good, very strong, lots of people saying they are worried about the health service, jobs for young people and urging Labour to win."
