    The Liberal Democrats hold a majority of seats on South Lakeland District Council.

    The results show that the Lib Dems held eight and gained one, an Independent gained one and the Conservatives held five and gained two.

    The Lib Dems now have 32 councillors. Twenty-six seats are required for a majority. See a break-down of the results on the South Lakeland District Council website, external.

    In the vote, 1,353 out of 33,565 ballot papers were spoiled. The first preference count was:

    • Steve Gibbons (Labour) 12,867 - 40%

    • Mike Starkie (Independent) 9,836 - 31%

    • Chris Whiteside (Conservative) 9,509 - 29%

    Mr Whiteside has been knocked out so they are now counting second preferences.
