    It's worth saying a word about turnout, which has been very high in some places, like 71% in Aberdeen South, 70% in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath and, in Berwickshire Roxburgh and Selkirk, 74%. That shows voters are energised. The figures could also relate to a referendum "bounce" - turnout in the vote on Scotland's future last September was 84.59%.

    This is looking like a truly massive night for the SNP at the expense of Labour. The SNP is claiming victory in traditional Labour-voting seats, such as those in the west of Scotland, with swings of more than 30% in some cases.

    The SNP have won Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, which had been represented by former prime minister Gordon Brown in the last parliament.

    The SNP's Roger Mullin took 27,628 votes - a swing from Labour to the SNP of 34.5%. An amazing swing but just short of the 34.9% in nearby Glenrothes.

    East Dunbartonshire: Jo Swinson will be deeply disappointed that she has lost this seat, even though her vote is only down by 2 points, easily the best Lib Dem performance so far tonight. However, the 30-point increase in the SNP vote, much as anticipated by the exit poll, has still swept her away.
