One SNP activist tells me that the initial indications they are getting are amazing for the SNP in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross. Another, jokes that it is "payback time after the referendum". They also think turnout might be very good.

  5. East Dunbartonshirepublished at 23:46 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

    Reevel Alderson
    BBC Scotland's social affairs correspondent

Last time around the SNP were a very poor fourth place in East Dunbartonshire and this area voted 60% No in the referendum.

So you might have thought this was unpromising ground for the SNP but the indications are that they are going to do very well here and they are confident they can take it from Jo Swinson of the Lib Dems.

"It is clear the SNP have done very well. There is no doubt about that. And for whoever becomes prime minister that is going to be a very big difficult political issue."

  8. After three results...published at 23:41 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

    John Curtice
Professor of politics at Strathclyde University

We were expecting a 3.5% swing to Labour in the first three constituencies. On average it has proved to be 4%. We expected a 14-point drop in the Lib Dem on average and that is exactly what has happened so far. Meanwhile, UKIP's vote has gone up on average by 17 points compared with our average exit poll estimate of 13 points.

Given the results in the first three constituencies there must be a high probability that the exit poll and the pre-polling day polls are correct in anticipating that UKIP will out poll the Lib Dems in this election.

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls tells Sky News "even if this exit poll is right, the Coalition have gone from a majority of 73 to zero and David Cameron would be clinging on".

He added: "Labour fought a good campaign; Ed Miliband has fought the best campaign".

  12. Fife countpublished at 23:34 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

    Ken Macdonald
    BBC Scotland Science Correspondent

All three Fife MPs are standing down so we can guarantee you three new MPs tonight.

In North East Fife, Lib Dem Sir Menzies Campbell is standing down and Labour's Lindsay Roy is not standing in Glenrothes.

Former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown's old seat of Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath is also up for grabs.

It is a bit like the Scottish battleground in miniature here. It shows you what the SNP would have to do to match what the exit poll is suggesting. In North East Fife the SNP would have to have a swing of 15% to win and they would have to come from third place.

In Glenrothes it would have to be a swing of more than 20% and beyond that, Kirkcaldy is number 50 on the SNP's target list. They would need a swing of more than 25% to take that.

The exit poll suggests they can do it; if they do it would utterly transform our understanding of Fife politics and Scottish politics.

  17. Lanarkshire count timespublished at 23:21 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

    Catriona Renton
    BBC Scotland

We've been told that with a fair wind and no hiccups we could be looking at a declaration time of 01:15 in Rutherglen and Hamilton West, with East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow not far behind.

All eyes are on the three counts here in South Lanarkshire to set the tone for the night and now many of the ballot boxes are here.

Almost a quarter of a million people are eligible to vote here. We expect all of the seats here to be early declarations - if there are no hiccups.

This used to be traditional Labour territory. To give you an idea of the challenge for the SNP here Labour polled 50% or more of the vote in all three of these seats in 2010.
