The first ballot boxes have arrived at Williamwood High School in Clarkston - where Labour leader Jim Murphy is hoping to retain his seat of East Renfrewshire.

Counting is under way in the large assembly area.

Neither Mr Murphy nor his closest rival in this contest, SNP candidate Kirsten Oswald, are here yet. Both live nearby and aren't expected for some time. The result is not expected here until after 03:00.

In North Lanarkshire, there was a Yes vote in the referendum. So the question is whether that vote will translate to a vote for the SNP today?

There are four seats in North Lanarkshire. They are all currently Labour and at the last election the party got more than 50% of the vote in all these seats. In Coatbridge, Tom Clarke got 66% of the vote.

So if the tectonic plates of Scotland are shifting we will definitely feel the tremors here.

David Wright: 330 seats needed for a majority so looks like a three-way coalition versus go-it-alone minority.

Robbie Duff: If Exit poll accurate, Scotland voting Labour would NOT have stopped a Tory government yet again & @snp will stand up for us.

Scottish Labour deputy leader Kezia Dugdale said she very much hoped the result was badly wrong. She feels there has been a different picture on the ground.

Derek Mackay, of the SNP, said even he thought 58 seats was "hard to believe". He said 58 feels on the optimistic side...

  13. Exit poll problempublished at 22:29 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

The biggest problem with the exit poll is to use a system designed for two parties and trying to extend it the six parties.

We will get the real results soon enough...

    Catriona Renton

I have spoken to Labour and SNP activists working in East Kilbride constituency. Labour say "we've done all we can - up to the voters now". Others say what they've heard on the doorstep does not tally with the polls. SNP very upbeat - saying: "fantastic reception at polling stations".

It will be a sensational and extraordinary night if the exit poll proves to be correct with the emphasis on proves to be correct. There only needs to be a slight shift in the actual polls, and that shift would be well within the margin of error, for things to change dramatically.

It is not enough for either side to know they have won. It is enough for each side to hope, however? What is does guarantee is a night of exquisite torture.

  17. Nicola Sturgeon, SNP leaderpublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon:, external I'd treat the exit poll with HUGE caution. I'm hoping for a good night but I think 58 seats is unlikely! #GE15

  18. Exit poll: Analysispublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

    Prof Charlie Jeffery
    University of Edinburgh

The exit poll team that did this poll tonight got it pretty much spot on in 2010. It was not far off in 2005 either.

The big difference this time is that they have attempted to capture the seat projections for the smaller parties - the SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Greens and UKIP.

Once you turn it from a three-party to a seven-party projection you import all sorts of uncertainties.

  19. What happened last time in 2010?published at 22:12 British Summer Time 7 May 2015

Five years ago the parties in Scotland divided the seats like this:

    • Labour 41

    • Lib Dem 11

    • SNP 6

    • Conservative 1

All swings from that situation during this evening will take 2010 as a benchmark.
