  14. Not as close as anticipatedpublished at 05:38 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

    John Curtice
Professor of politics at Strathclyde University

Election night has been filled with both surprises and shocks. Far from being a closely contested election as anticipated by the pre-polling day opinion polls, the Conservatives have emerged as first in votes and seats by a considerable distance.

Meanwhile, the SNP have almost swept the board throughout Scotland, while the Lib Dems are apparently heading for their worst result since 1970.

Although UKIP look as though they are going to come third in votes, they are apparently destined to achieve very little in terms of seats.

With over half the results now declared, it looks as though the Conservatives will emerge some seven or so points ahead of Labour in terms of the popular vote, and it remains possible that they might just succeed in getting an overall majority.

Meanwhile, thanks not least to a near wipe-out in Scotland, Labour is expected to emerge with considerably fewer seats than they won in 2010. The SNP appear set to win around a half of the vote in Scotland and all but a handful of the seats north of the border.

  15. 'Stand up for the people' - says Milibandpublished at 05:34 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

Ed Miliband said Labour had seen a "surge of nationalism overwhelm our party" in Scotland.

"The next government has a huge responsibility in facing the very difficult task of keeping our country together.

"Whatever party we come from, if we believe in the United Kingdom, we should stand-up for people in every part of our United Kingdom.

"I believe that what unites is much more than what divides us."

    ed Miliband

He continued "it's been a 'disappointing and difficult night" and "I am deeply sorry for what has happened" to colleagues in Scotland.
