  1. No 'simplistic solutions' in tackling extremism - UKIP's Evanspublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Victoria Derbyshire

    Suzanne Evans

UKIP's deputy leader Suzanne Evans told the Victoria Derbyshire programme that radicalism and extremism had to be confronted on a number of different levels, including employing community policing as a way of keeping an "ear to the ground" - but that many different aspects of policy and policing options had to be used.

    Ms Evans said:

    Quote Message

The problem with the debate is that politicians are trying to put forward very simplistic solutions and actually there aren't any... this is something we have to tackle on numerous levels. We have to tackle the security perspective. We have to tackle it in terms of... integrating communities better... and we have to look at immigration as well."

  7. 'Bad taste' to use terror attacks for political purposespublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Victoria Derbyshire

    John Nicolson

The SNP's John Nicolson, speaking on the Victoria Derbyshire programme this morning, said it was in "extraordinary bad taste" to use last week's terrorist attack in Manchester as a means of criticising opponents in the general election campaign - singling out the Conservatives' Dominic Raab for having done so. Mr Raab had earlier launched an attack on Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn for "cosying up to terrorists" in the recent past.

Mr Nicolson won applause from the audience when he said:

    Quote Message

I think we should stop impugning one another's motives in this debate. It's in extraordinary bad taste. We are in the immediate aftermath of this terrorist attack that has destroyed so many families' lives and all - all of us in this audience - are horrified by it. All of our political leaders are determined to stop terrorism so it seems to me to be in very bad taste for Dominic to try to use this in the way he is doing."

  13. Raab claims Corbyn wants to 'cosy up' to terroristspublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Victoria Derbyshire

    Dominic Raab

The former Conservative Justice minister Dominic Raab has continued his party's attack on Jeremy Corbyn's record on the IRA and groups involved in armed struggle in the Middle East.

Speaking on the the Victoria Derbyshire programme debate morning Mr Raab cast doubt on the Labour leader's ability to lead the country as Prime Minister in the event of a Labour victory because of his record:

"I do think leadership matters and I put 'll put it as bluntly as I can....I don't think that if you compare the leadership Theresa May offers with Jeremy Corbyn... I don't think the guy who wants to cosy up and befriend terrorists is the right guy to defend us against terrorism."

Responding for Labour, shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry sought to defend Mr Corbyn both on speaking to Irish republicans and on his voting record in Parliament on anti-terrorist measures:

    Quote Message

In the 1980s something had to be done in trying to bring people to the table....The approach Labour takes is is let's look at legislation that works, that doesn't divide communities but brings them together... now if there are things that the security services need by way of legislation then absolutely we should give it to them but don't just do things for the sake of being seen to do things."

  20. Gwynne defends Abbott and Corbyn - and Labour's anti-terrorism recordpublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott told the BBC's Andrew Marr on Sunday that she had changed her mind on the IRA since the 1980s - and likened it to changing her hairstyle.

Labour's Andrew Gwynne insisted that Diane Abbott was "absolutely" up to the job of home secretary, if Labour won the election, and her views on the IRA have changed.

The Labour general election co-ordinator told Today that "no Labour government will ever put the security of this nation at risk".

He was also questioned over Jeremy Corbyn "admitting he attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of a Palestinian terrorist involved in the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre" before he became Labour leader, as the Telegraph, external has reported.

Mr Gwynne says the visit was as "part of a parliamentary delegation". Mr Corbyn supports peace in the Middle East and Labour backs a two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he adds.
