Radio Four's the Westminster Hour has been hearing from Mark Harper, Conservative MP for the Forest of Dean and Labour's Angela Smith.

Mr Harper told Carolyn Quinn it's right that Theresa May has formed a government and that "we get on with governing in the national interest".

"We also need to reflect on why we didn't get the result we wanted," he added.

He said that it's clear voters did not want Jeremy Corbyn as PM.

Angela Smith says the election was unnecessary.

"She gambled and she took a jump and she's failed miserably."

The UK now goes into Brexit talks "severely weakened".

His appointment as Environment Secretary has been given a guarded welcome by some farmers, who hope he may raise the profile of farming.

But Tom Burke from the green think tank e3g told BBC News: “The environment is something young voters really care about. If the Tories really want to reconnect with the youth surge, this is about the worst option they could have chosen.”

A senior farming source, who didn’t want to be named, welcomed the appointment to Defra of a “big hitter”.

“Defra’s long been a backwater, so at last it’s not someone in charge who’s being put out to grass,” he said.

“But Gove will have to acknowledge that agriculture faces some huge challenges with Brexit – instead of closing his ears and pretending that everything’s going to be all right like his predecessor (Andrea Leadsom)."

"It's also about ensuring the dealings with some of the social issues we see in our country, so tackling issues around mental health, ensuring we have proper technical education for young people, tackling the housing crisis.

"This is what my Cabinet, my government will be getting on and doing."

  15. What does the Commons leader do?published at 19:37 British Summer Time 11 June 2017

Former energy and climate minister Andrea Leadsom has been given the role of the Leader of the House of Commons as part of the PM's reshuffle.

Media commentators have said this job could prove more important than in recent years because of the hung parliament. She could be key to getting deals done in Parliament.

But what will she have to do in this new post?

The Commons leader's main role is to organise "government business" in the House by working alongside the chief whip - who remains Gavin Williamson.

It is their responsibility to tell the Commons what is scheduled for the following week and provisionally what will happen the week after.

The Leader is the chair for several Cabinet committees including the Ministerial Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Legislative Programming Committee.

They can stand in for the prime minister at PMQs or for more formal duties but this would normally fall under the deputy prime minister's remit.
