Tory Brexiteers remain Mrs May's strongest supporters determined she should continue to avoid any delay or dilution to their version of Brexit.

Their opponents see an enfeebled Mrs May as a chance to demand a very different type of Brexit.

Already key figures like the Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson have signaled their support for remaining inside the single market.

Senior cabinet ministers have stressed the need to put the economy ahead of immigration, and crucially the DUP have flagged their opposition to quitting the EU without a deal.

Above all, leading figures in the remain camp believe there is no Commons majority for Mrs May's approach.

The battle over Brexit is about to resume and Mrs May's fate in that Titanic tussle is viewed as secondary.
