The rector of Loughton has expressed his "thoughts and prayers" to those caught up in the incident.

Reverend Chris Davies opened up St John's Church in Loughton and said people were "upset and anxious" about what happened.

"It is a very, very difficult event," he said.

"It's not something you expect to happen in a place like Loughton and the number of children who witnessed it were very upset.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families concerned and all at the school."

Police officers across Essex will be working "through the night and into tomorrow", Ch Supt Tracey Harman said.

She appealed for anyone with information about the whereabouts of 51-year-old Terry Glover or the silver Ford KA to call 999 and quote the incident number 726 of Monday 2 December.

Ch supt Harman said the force's thoughts are with the 12-year-old victim's family, friends and all those who were injured or affected by what happened.

"This has been an incredibly difficult day for the local community, and we ask everyone to continue to show the kindness and bravery that we have seen today, and to respect the privacy of all those involved," she said.

Essex Police said it is "investigating whether or not this incident may be connected to another incident nearby".

Ch Supt Tracey Harman said the crash near Debden Park High School was a "terrible incident".

She said: "We are releasing the name of a man who we want to speak to in connection with the investigation.

"This is a local man - 51-year-old Terry Glover, from Loughton."

Ch Supt Harman said officers had searched "a number of addresses" to find Mr Glover but the search for him and silver KA with the registration LS08 OKW continues.

"I would like to make a direct plea to Mr Glover if he is watching or listening to this. Contact us - we need to speak to you," she said.

Officers are still appealing for information regarding a silver Ford KA which was involved in the crash.

The boy, who also attends Debden Park High School, is being treated for injuries to his arm, back, leg and head in hospital. He said everything "really hurt", especially his leg.

The GCSE student, who is accompanied by his mother in hospital, told the BBC he was walking with his friend, who was thrown over the bonnet of the car. He said his friend was in hospital.

He said the Ford KA deliberately aimed for them but does not remember much more.

We heard from Helen Gascoyne, the head of Debden Park High School, in a statement earlier.

She spoke of being "devastated" to confirm the death of a 12-year-old pupil.

Writing on Twitter, he appealed for help in tracing the Ford KA that failed to stop after the collision.

The head of Debden Park High School has released a statement regarding the incident in which a 12-year-old student died.

Helen Gascoyne said: "As a school and a community, we are devastated to say that, as a result of the incident in Willingale Road this afternoon, it is with great sadness that we must report that a... student from our school has sadly died.

"Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected.

"As a school we continue to work with the police supporting the ongoing investigation.

"The school will be open tomorrow with a number of counsellors on hand to support our community."

The head of Debden Park High School has confirmed the 12-year-old boy killed in the incident was a pupil at the school.

Essex Police has said it will hold a media briefing later this evening.

A man who lives near the scene of the incident said police arrived "rapidly".

Sebastian Fontanelle said he heard lots of sirens and saw the air ambulance land at about 16:00 GMT.

BBC reporter Tolu Adeoye has tweeted a video of police officers at the scene.

A church in Loughton will be holding a Mass service at 20:00 GMT after the "horrific events this evening".

Father Sam Stuart said St John's Church Loughton would also be open tomorrow "for prayer, lighting candles and if anyone needs to talk".

The crash happened at about 15:30 GMT, which is about the time pupils would be exiting the school.

I'm standing at one end of Willingdale Road, which is closed between Rookwood Avenue and Audley Gardens.

There are four uniformed police officers guarding the end of the road.

The officers are only allowing residents into that road if they can prove they live there.

Essex Police said officers were "working diligently" to identify the driver of the Ford KA who "failed to stop at the scene".

Det Ch Insp Rob Kirby said: "This has been a truly shocking incident and my deepest sympathies are with all those involved.
