Posters attacking Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn have been seen at counts in Northampton and in Corby.

    Controversial posters attacking Jeremy Corbyn

They come from a group called Campaign Against Corbynism, based in London.

It looks like they’ve been put up nationwide in marginal seats and on polling day.

Labour candidate for Corby Beth MIller said the use of the posters was "really desperate".

One of the seats to watch in this election is the former steel industry hub of Corby, the third most marginal in Northamptonshire - after the two Northampton seats.

Only once - Phil Hope (pictured) in 1997 in the Labour landslide - has the winning candidate had more than 50% of the vote.

Conservative Tom Pursglove, Labour's Beth Miller and the Lib Dems' Chris Stanbra locked horns in 2017 when they all fought the same seat - which has one of the fastest-growing populations in the country.

Mr Pursglove won with a majority of 2,690.

In the EU Referendum, Corby voted 64.2% to leave - the highest leave vote in Northamptonshire - which may boost the pro-Brexit Conservative Party.

  9. Analysis: Brexit-supporting county features key marginalspublished at 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

When it comes to leaving the European Union, Northamptonshire was unequivocal with 59% of voters backing that option in 2016.

Whether they favour Boris Johnson’s “oven-ready Brexit” or not remains to be seen.

Austerity is another big talking point, following the collapse of the financially unstable, Conservative-run county council.

    Andrea Leadsom

Whatever the issues, it’s unlikely four of the current seven Conservative-controlled seats will change hands, with business secretary Andrea Leadsom (pictured above) looking certain to hold on to her South Northamptonshire seat.

Northampton North, Northampton South (pictured top) and Corby will be much closer.

In the former, Michael Ellis’ triumphed over Labour’s Sally Keeble by just 807 votes in 2017.

Whoever wins in that bellwether seat could well see their party leader heading to Number 10.
